TV Torso Tonight at the Mohawk [Show Preview]

In an interview leading up to last year’s SXSW, lead singer and guitarist of TV Torso, Matt Oliver, described his band’s sound by saying, “I have a guitar. That's it.” And that simple statement seems to sum up the band’s musical sensibility pretty well - it’s no frills, straight ahead rock with a classic bent and plenty of feel-good hooks. more ›

Yellow Fever at Emo's [Show Preview]

A year removed from the release of their self-titled debut album, Austin’s Yellow Fever have kept a low profile. Then again, that’s how this perpetually cool band has always operated: they put their heads down, play a ton of shows, and crank out effortless pop songs. You can catch them tonight at Emo’s, where they will be performing with Air Waves and Hidden Ritual. more ›

YellowFever at the Continental Club [Preview]

YellowFever at the Continental Club [Preview]

2010 has been a year to remember for local favorites YellowFever: they removed the space in their name; band member Jennifer Moore was arrested in the Houston airport after forgetting about a kitchen knife in her bag; they dropped an EP; they went on tour; and oh yeah, three-plus years' worth of material was finally gathered onto their self-titled debut LP and released on Wild World, an imprint operated by the Vivian Girls. more ›

Tonight: Screaming Females, The Crack Pipes and YellowFever at the Mohawk

Though she is, in fact, only one female (and a petite one at that), Screaming Females' lead singer Marissa Paternoster packs quite a vocal wallop. Her throat-shredder of a voice is front and center in this New Jersey trio's bombastic punk rock sound, backed by a chugging rhythm section and wailing guitar lines that are heavy on the wah-wah. Screaming Females, who along with Paternoster are Jarrett Dougherty on drums and King Mike on bass, got their start in 2006 with the self-released Baby Teeth album. The scorching punk aesthetic placed them firmly in New Brunswick's D.I.Y. basement punk scene, alongside such bands as The Bouncing Souls, Thursday and The Ergs!. more ›

Don't Believe the Hoopla: A Chat with YellowFever

Don't Believe the Hoopla: A Chat with YellowFever

What ups and downs...we're not even into autumn, and YellowFever have already had a full 2010. To recap: the band's material finally achieved wide release thanks to the Vivian Girls Wild World imprint, they embarked on quite a summer tour, and there's that arrest in Houston. In short, duo Jennifer Moore and Adam Jones have been busy with both the good and the bad. Now back from the road, the band spoke with us via email (and answered jointly, except where noted) about their new EP and a possible third name change. First of all, what happened to the space in your band’s name? Does YellowFever just feel…less cluttered? Well, funny you should ask. Several years ago we were asked by a clothing company to change our name because they own Yellow Fever. So, we changed it to YellowFever. Several years passed with no problems. Just last week the same clothing company says we need to change it again. It seems as though this year will be non-stop fun in the courtroom. more ›

Titus Andronicus at Emo's with YellowFever, Whitman [show preview]

Composers of epic, scream-along songs full of heart and the expelling of lungs, Titus Andronicus are a New Jersey five-piece who are hitting Emo's outside stage tonight. The band's latest album The Monitor came out on XL Recordings this spring, which is described by Wikipedia as "a concept album loosely based on themes relating to the American Civil War." Heavy. more ›

YellowFever Return to Austin Saturday

YellowFever Return to Austin Saturday

Hometown heroes YellowFever are in the middle of a mammoth summer tour, but before they hit the west coast they're coming home for a few dates. Earlier this month the band's vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Moore had an unfortunate layover in the Harris County jail following a knife-related snafu, but as far as we know the rest of the tour is going along swimmingly, and you'll have the chance to find out for yourselves at Emo's. more ›

Away We Go With Ponytail, Harlem, Teenage Cool Kids, & Yellow Fever at Red 7 [Tonight]

Austinist Show Preview: Belaire (comeback show!), Elf Power, and a bunch more at Mohawk

The Mohawk on Friday is going to be absolutely busting out with music, as one of their patently awesome two-stages-for-one-ticket deals hits the scene. Getting the big print and final time slot on the two stages are Elf Power and Belaire, but they're just small pieces of what looks to be a good long night of song. So we'll break this down all methodical-like so you won't have to worry about missing anything, and you'll finally learn the wonderfulness that is six live (and actually quite good!) bands for less than an Alexander Hamilton. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Voxtrot, Yellow Fever, & Ringo Deathstar at Emo's

Voxtrot, Austin's own local-gone-national pop princes, is a name that seems like it's been wandering around the scene forever. So long, even, that it's pretty damn surprising that their debut album was released less than a year ago. But over these last few years, they've been through a lot: widespread hype, critical anticipation, stylistic maturation, and maybe even a little bit of disappointment. But that's not to say that the sky isn't still the ceiling for our boys, and, just as a reminder of how far they've come since their incredibly well-liked early EPs, two days after this show at Emo's Outside (Outside!), they'll be throwing down some powerful post-emo way out in some crazy place called Barcelona. Wherever that is. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Nat Baldwin, more at Rancho Relaxo

In the tradition of house/venues like the departed Jesse’s Bed and Breakfast and Natrix Natrix (a label as well as a venue, who are also co-presenting this show), the up-and-coming Rancho Relaxo is poised to take its part to promote music in residential spaces in Austin, at least until the neighbors call the cops. The venue has already played host to Sir Richard Bishop and Yellow Fever, and will hopefully continue to sponsor creative performances for some time to come. more ›

ACL Afterparties-Hot Freaks!

ACL Afterparties-Hot Freaks!

Hot Freaks! is a loose affiliation--a cabal, if you will--of international music and culture bloggers, including Dallas' Gorilla Vs. Bear, New York's brooklynvegan, and Toronto's Chromewaves, who have banded together Voltron-style to wreak cross-promotional havoc on the Western blogosphere. Masterminded by Austin promoter John Mascarenhas, Hot Freaks! has put together a lovely set of after-parties for those of us who won't be snarled in post-ACL parking-lot quagmires until midnight. Both events are looking really tempting,... more ›

Yellow Fever, Horse + Donkey at Emo's Lounge

Yellow Fever, Horse + Donkey at Emo's Lounge

Those dang Emo's ... always inching around for a little extra room to crowd bands in. We have to say though that we love Emo's Lounge maybe even a little more than the old indoor stage: better sight lines, ingenious two-tiered standing room, and the band has to enter/exit the stage through the crowd, giving you that much more of a chance to feel up Marnie Stern or whoever. Tonight's bill will feature local lacklusters Yellow Fever, who play lovely Moe Tucker-ish pop and are most assuredly NOT that New York fashion-guy-turned-punk/emo/ska artist...thank frickin' god. Preceding will be the excellent likes of punk-funk-drunk-skunks Horse + Donkey, The Little Bicycles, and Year Of The Rat, who although apparently named after the Wipers song play mostly subdued and very cool Mogwai-style ambient rock. Emo's Lounge-it's right on the corner there, you can't miss it! more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Single Frame at The Mohawk

Single Frame has been creating eclectic electro-pop for a good number of years now. The band formed in 2000 in Austin and early recordings included a first full-length, Wetheads Come Running, and the Burn Radio Airtest EP released under their original moniker Single Frame Ashtray. Now veterans of two additional records, Single Frame distinguishes itself with eccentric pop that utilizes a variety of jingles, be it the simply synth outputs or unusual sounds obtained from... more ›

After an incredibly (too) long hiatus, the lovable local kaleidoscopic synth pop band Belaire return with a brand new album titled Exploding, Impacting, despite the non-stop touring schedule of members Jason Chronis and Matt Simon (thanks to a little side project they have called Voxtrot) and twin sister (and singing partner) Christa Palazzolo now living in New York City. Austinist Show Preview: The Unbearables and Ringo Deathstarr at the Mohawk

The Unbearables brought their rock-opera concept to Dougherty Arts Center last year in the form of Bitten! A Zombie Rock Odyssey. Although we were unable to catch that spectacle, the assorted jams on the band’s MySpace page have us day-dreaming about the possible storyline. The band brings its catchy pop and witty lyrics to the Mohawk tonight for what promises to be a grand ol’ time. Supporting the bill are local shoe-gazers Ringo Deathstarr and Yellow Fever. The former should appease fans of the Jesus and Mary Chain with their brilliant noise-rock while the latter specializes in simple yet alluring pop. Julian Decided kicks things off at 10 p.m. more ›
