Less than a year after moving to Austin from Ohio, popular internet radio station WOXY.com has closed. The station went silent around 9 am today, and a note on the station's website read: "Due to current economic realities and the lack of ongoing funding for WOXY's operations, we've been forced to suspend our live broadcasts as of March 23rd. We're continuing to explore options to keep The Future of Rock and Roll alive."

Preview: WOXY and Austinist Present Four Tet at The Mohawk (Tomorrow)
As Saturday nights at The Mohawk go, you could do far worse than the inside/outside lineup scheduled for tomorrow. The big draw is of course DJ, producer, and possessor of big hair, Kieran Hebden, AKA Four Tet. Hebden got his start playing guitar in the post-rock trio Fridge, but is better known for the rich electronic pastiche work he makes as Four Tet—not to mention his free jazz collaborations with drummer Steve Reid, and frequent remixes and collaborations with the likes of Burial, Aphex Twin, and Explosions in the Sky.
Interview & Preview: TV Torso @ Beerland [Thursday]
On Thursday though, the entertainment on offer at Beerland is all local -- enjoy agreeable blues-pop from The Happen-Ins, brooding post-punk from Dirty Dancing, and stirring indie-rock from TV Torso. The WOXY DJs will also be on hand, spinning choice tunes, no doubt. Matt Oliver from TV Torso was kind enough to answer some questions for us over email earlier this week, complete with a plethora of guiding Gmail emoticons, which, according to him, “pretty much say anything way better than I ever could.”
KGSR Hires Mark Abuzzahab
KGSR has announced their hire of Mark Abuzzahab to replace longtime afternoon drive host and Music Director Jody Denberg, who signed off back in December. Abuzzahab formerly worked for WOXY back in Ohio, and most recently for Clear Channel’s KBCO in Colorado. He starts his first on-air shift at KGSR Feb. 22.
Austinist, WOXY and the Onion Present: Fiery Furnaces
In 2009, the brother-sister duo Matt and Eleanor Friedberger released “The End Is Near”, a full length called I’m Going Away and its reworked covers companion Take Me Round Again. They also premiered the video for “Even in the Rain”, featuring the Friedbergers as well as Ted Travelstead (a friend and co-writer of the director Scott Jacobson), Jon Wurster (drummer for Superchunk and the Mountain Goats and part of the brilliant radio comedy team Scharpling and Wurster), Jason Loewenstein (bassist for The Fiery Furnaces and also a member of Sebadoh) and of course John Oliver (Daily Show).
Listening Party for Vampire Weekend's Contra next month @ Scoot Inn
Has it really been almost two years since Vampire Weekend captured our hearts with their addictive debut album? The memories of a jam-packed, sold out show at The Mohawk in late 2007 and the ensuing SXSW gigs the following year are still vivid in our minds. Well, there’s good news for fans of the New York band -- they’re back and plan to release their sophomore effort, Contra next month. Austinist and WOXY.com proudly present the Listening Party for the new record on January 12th at Scoot Inn. Get all the details on WOXY’s blog and RSVP for a chance to win a copy of the “Cousins” 7" or a remix CD. Whet your appetite with the video for “Cousins” via YouTube and fall in love all over again. Nice jersey bro!
Preview: Broken Social Scene at Seaholm Power Plant [Tonight, Free]
With all the events, after-shows, parties, and spontaneous outdoor dance parties surrounding ACL weekend, you’d be forgiven for overlooking some of the festival’s incredible (official or not) ancillary events. This is not one of those events to overlook. If you only make it to one show outside of the festival this year, Rare Magazine and WOXY, Austin’s newest internet radio station (which is already endearing itself quite nicely to our community), have made a strong case for this being the one to hit. Of course, we’re referring to the rechristening of the decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant as a live music venue, with none other than the ensemble cast of Toronto’s Broken Social Scene shattering the bottle of champagne on the art-deco columns (figuratively for sure, literally, maybe).
Breaking: WOXY to Host Broken Social Scene @ ACL Afterparty
WOXY has announced their ACL afterparty taking place Friday, October 2 at the Seaholm Power Plant on Cesar Chavez. The recently transplanted internet radio station will present Broken Social Scene to the 300-capacity venue at 10 pm, free. More details on tickets and Saturday night's lineup coming later in the week.
Music News & Notes: WOXY, HAAM & Hip-Hop
The Deli is sharing a new video for "Hometown Fantasy" from local minimalist darlings the Wooden Birds.
Weekend Music Preview: WOXY BBQ @ Scoot Inn [Sunday]
Located just east of I-35 on 4th St., the getaway from Red River St. that is Scoot Inn hosts three inviting nights of music this weekend. On Friday, when the wind blows in The Low Lows’ doleful lo-fi beauty, ponder upon Brothers and Sisters’ affecting Americana, tango with Mr. Lewis & The Funeral 5’s experiments in punk ‘n’ polka, and order your whiskey neat to The Sideshow Tragedy’s country fried rock. Return and recover on Saturday with a substantial serving of Black Panda’s garage ditties, sample and savor Kingdom of Suicide Lovers’ dark concoctions, dip into Manikin’s absorbing rhythms, and save room for some guest acts (and Sunday’s show) as well.
Music News & Notes: KISS, KUT, WOXY & More
WOXY will celebrate their move to Austin Sept. 6 at Scoot Inn. Black Before Red, TV Torso, English Teeth and Martin Crane will perform.
WOXY.com Moves South to Austin
WOXY, the popular internet radio station currently based in Ohio, will be setting up shop in Austin in September. WOXY started using its current alternative/modern rock format in 1983, began an internet stream in 1998, and went internet-only in 2004. The current DJs are making the move to our town, with Austinist's own Paige Maguire joining the staff as Director of Marketing and Development. The station will be operating out of the Austin Theater building on South Congress; the plan is to have HD video of their Lounge Act sessions up by the first of October. [woxy.com: Austin FAQ]
