Snoop Dogg Arrested in West Texas for What Else: Weed

Snoop Dogg Arrested in West Texas for What Else: Weed

Snoop Dogg (aka Calvin Broadus, Jr.) was arrested at the West Texas Border Patrol checkpoint for having .13 pounds of marijuana in his tour bus, reports The Texas Tribune. He was given a citation after his arrest by Hudspeth County sheriff’s deputies. CNN reports that Broadus has a prescription for medical marijuana in his home state of California. You're probably reminded of Snoop's notable collaboration with Willie Nelson, "My Medicine", and it's a funny story: Willie was arrested in late 2010 at the same place with 6 ounces of weed. more ›

Willie Nelson to Get Community Service for Marijuana Charges

Willie Nelson to Get Community Service for Marijuana Charges

The community service: to sing in the Hudspeth County Courthouse in West Texas (Sierra Blanca, to be exact). In November 2010, Nelson had been pulled over in that county and charged with marijuana possession after authorities found 3-4 ounces of the drug on his tour bus. Kit Bramblett, Hudspeth County District Attorney, said in a radio interview on WOAI, "You can bet your ass, I'm not going to be mean to Willie Nelson." If the judge approves the plea deal, Nelson will just have to pay a small fine along with performing at the courthouse. [WOAI] more ›

Weekly Music Picks - Hearts Pumping, Music Thumping

Monday: The only thing people are going to be talking about on Monday is the Willie Nelson show at the new ACL Live Theater, where the patron saint of all things country/amazing will be performing. Either that, or their googly-eyed Valentine's Day Plans. Not romantic but possibly awesome: Death Angel and D.R.I. at Emo's. more ›

Music: Willie, Dylan, and Mellencamp Play Round Rock Tonight

Music: Willie, Dylan, and Mellencamp Play Round Rock Tonight

With nearly 150 million records sold between them, we'd wager that you already know plenty about Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Bob Dylan. For some, this might be a dream bill of classic American entertainers, while others might view it as a cash run by a bunch of aging legends past their prime. With Mellencamp and Dylan in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and Nelson in the Country Music Hall, what one can't argue is that this is a rare opportunity to view three hugely popular (and populist) musicians in a relaxed setting. So if this is your thing, put on your sunscreen, leave work early, and start packing the car for Round Rock. To help inform and prepare you for tonight's show, here's some information you may not be aware of: more ›

Austinist on the Road: SPI Music Fest Recap

Austinist on the Road: SPI Music Fest Recap

We kicked off our 2008 SPI Music Fest experience at the Dunes Stage at Schlitterbahn on Halloween in South Padre Island with funk 'n' punk courtesy of Mexico's 60 Tigres. The variety of costumes in the crowd included Alexander the Great and Wonder Woman, and plenty of nurses, fairies, devils, and a bat or two, making for a somewhat surreal afternoon. Add to that the plethora of cats that seem to have found home at the waterpark and it was truly unique beginning to this festival. more ›

Music Review: Hot Chip Go All Smorgasbord On Made In The Dark

Music Review: Hot Chip Go All Smorgasbord On Made In The Dark

Though wholly deserved, it was a little surprising to find our favorite bedroom nerd-rockers Hot Chip on the cusp of huge fame last year. Their album The Warning went gold in the UK, a Mercury Music Prize nomination followed, and sold-out shows across the US and Europe became the norm. This from fellows who record in a London bedsit and look like they walked out of the Dell engineer's cafeteria. As a sold-out crowd at Antone's last May attested to, the group's unique mix of electronics, blue-eyed soul, club bangers, and indie-rock captivated many worldwide searching for a new voice. Hot Chip have always claimed that they loved lots of music, but that nobody made the exact music that they wanted to listen to. And their pastiche of their influences backed the statement up - critics weren't sure what to compare them to. But they sure loved them. more ›

SXSW News & Rumor Updates: Willie, Van, And 350 Bands

Classic Rock, Classic Country: As per usual, Willie Nelson will play two nights at The Backyard for both locals avoiding SXSW and tourists willing to skip one night of showcases to see Austin's most enduring music legend. Willie's shows are tentatively scheduled for 3/14 and 3/15, and will go on sale sometime in February. In another move designed to access some tourist dollars, Direct Events has announced a relatively intimate show with Van Morrison at the Austin Music Hall on Tuesday, March 11. Van the Man apparently hasn't heard about the looming recession, as tickets are priced from $102 to a whopping $257. more ›

Austinist Interviews SXSW: Ginger of the Wildhearts

Austinist Interviews SXSW: Ginger of the Wildhearts

The Wildhearts have had a fluctuating career marked by numerous peaks and valleys. The English band formed towards the end of the “hair metal” era, released their debut full-length (Earth Vs The Wildhearts) in 1993, and re-formed last year with plans for a new album, due in April of this year. However, their mainstay has always been straight up rock n’ roll, highlighted by the talent, and antics of lead singer, Ginger. Formerly of the (London) Quireboys (some of us might still remember the forgotten anthem “7 O’Clock”), and currently also pursuing solo ambitions, we caught up with Ginger to quiz him on the past, present and future. more ›

Concert Update: The Roots, Merle Haggard, Four Tet, And So Much More

Now that we're in mid-January, club bookings for winter and spring shows are beginning to emerge. While much internet browsing has already been done looking for the SXSW 2007 lineup, there are also plenty of great touring shows dropping in outside of those dates (thankfully). New shows from The Roots, Explosions In The Sky, Midlake, and a Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard double bill top the new additions, but there is plenty here for all musical... more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Paris 49 Happy Hour at the Continental Club

Austinist Show Preview: Paris 49 Happy Hour at the Continental Club

Django Reinhardt’s life might have only spanned the early part of the 20th century, but his renowned compositions inspired a generous collection of musicians like Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, Santana, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The members of Paris 49, galvanized by Reinhardt’s jazz guitar genius, are no different. The band, which includes some of Austin’s own local icons Olivier Giraud and David Chenu, continues its residency at the Continental Club this, and every Monday. Paris 49’s jazz tinged swing ditties are the perfect antidote for your case of the Mondays. more ›

“Are the Democrats going to dance the mandate Macarena?”

Tonight you might think that Dan Rather's jelly, because chances are he’s gonna be on a roll. Or something. The venerable newsman, and Wharton, Texas native, will be live on set tonight to analyze election results. But he won’t be working with Bob Schieffer or any other straight news reporters from around the nation, as he has done for the last 44 years. Tonight he saddles up alongside Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on Comedy... more ›
