Last Saturday, actor Will Ferrell made a quick stop in Austin during a press tour for his new film Semi-Pro. He also attended a sneak preview of the film and did a Q&A session at the Alamo Drafthouse, where attendees were required to dress in 70's basketball attire for admission - you can see the Drafthouse "team photo" here. Austinist's Tom Thornton and Gordon And The Whale's Chase Whale spoke briefly to Ferrell during the media day.

Like an accidental tourist, Terry George stumbled into filmmaking while penning a semi-autobiographical stage play with scribe partner Jim Sheridan about a failed prison break. Stemming from that first true-story collaboration, he has continued as both a writer and director, chronicling the triumph of the human spirit, and helping to catapult injustices in Ireland and the heinous genocide in Rwanda into our national consciousness with the critically acclaimed Hotel Rwanda. In conjunction with the regional...
Gangsters retire and move to Miami; rock stars never retire, but some do move to Nashville, have kids, and start making records by the numbers. Who wouldn’t? It’s not like you’d need to impress anybody anymore. Exhibit A: Icky Thump, the 6th LP from the Artists Formerly From Detroit, the White Stripes. Icky Thump follows a similar template as last year’s under-appreciated Get Behind Me Satan—open with an iconoclastic berserker of a single and spend...
Go ahead and order that failure bowl at KFC and dig in with your spork of sadness, it might be the only thing that will smother the despair that will come with missing Patton Oswalt present Ratatouille tonight at the Alamo. That’s right kids, it’s sold out. In fact, it was sold out last Thursday. You will just have to wait until June 29th for your yearly dose of Pixar magic and Brad Bird brilliance....
Besides the 80 degree August weather, you probably noticed something was a little off this Wednesday. More traffic on the roads, fewer sunbathers at Barton Springs? For those of you who forgot and for those of you who just don't care, The University of Texas began its first day of classes today. A couple of weeks ago, we let you know what’s been happening around campus; now we want to let you know what’s...

Looking like a cross between Alfred E. Neumann and an exaggeration of Will Ferrell's Bush impersonation, 20-year old Pierce Bush was recently spotted on Facebook ...
[The following is an editorial column by contributor Alison Coffey and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Austinist staff. --The Editors] In the tradition of Neal Pollack's Salon.com Grammy's post, I've decided to take us on a live tour of this year's Academy Awards, minute by minute, hour by hour, boring acceptance speech by boring acceptance speech. Well, I hope not, but odds are, the acceptance speeches are going to be boring....
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon undergoes emergency surgery after doctors discover an increase in cranial pressure. Meanwhile, Pat Robertson has the audacity to suggest this is some sort of "divine retribution." The Canadian Medical Association Journal claims that supplying winos with booze might actually be good for them and everyone else. BBC lists the top 100 things we learned this year. Our favorites? "WD-40 dissolves cocaine - it has been used by a pub...
Duck Soup isn't just that Marx Brothers movie Woody Allen wanders into during Hannah and Her Sisters, it is also, in our humble (well, okay, not so humble) opinion, the greatest comedy of all time. With the sad, but lovable exception of Zeppo (though some disagree), the Marx Brothers are true comedy geniuses. Duck Soup is chock full of memorable quotes, like this exchange: Rufus T. Firefly: Not that I care, but where is...
Bewitched From director Nora Ephron, who brought us such sugary sweet servings as “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail,” comes this reimagining of the classic 60’s television sitcom of the same name. Will Ferrell, whom we obviously love for his comedic chops (Blue Oyster Cult sketch, anyone?), if not his fine acting skills, plays Jack, a struggling actor who is cast to play Darrin in a remake of the tv show. He gets...
Last Thursday, the Maui Film Festival awarded Andrew, Owen, and Luke Wilson with a Shooting Star Trophy for their most recent film, The Wendell Baker Story, which the festival describes as "inspiring." Wendell Baker was filmed almost entirely in Austin a couple of years ago. We remember watching the brothers (and Will Ferrell!) film some scenes in Hyde Park and we remember being star-struck. At the time, we were hopeful for a great movie....
Starting tonight, "The Producers" comes to Austin for a weeklong run at Bass Concert Hall. With Bob Amaral playing failed musical producer Max Bialystock and Andy Taylor in the role of accountant Leo Bloom, we're sure this will be a hilarious and faithful rendition of the Broadway phenomenom, which has won just about every Tony Award ever. This outta tide you over until the movie remake starring Will Ferrell, Uma Thurman, Nathan Lane and...
