2008 has yet to reveal its true heavy hitters release-wise, and it's just as well: I haven't even had time to absorb a thousand or so top ten lists, my own personal reflections on 2007, and my expectations for the new year. Even so, there is a handful of intriguing things this week, provided you like Various Artists.

His father abandoned the family before he was born, he lost 2 fingers in a sawmill accident, he lost his mother and wife to cancer and his son to drug overdose within a single year, and he suffered a heart attack on stage. But, Shaver has long channeled his pain into his music. For...

Having never seen the Rentals play during their initial run, we haven’t anything to compare last Thursday's show to, but we can safely say that we were disappointed. We weren’t expecting miracles – a band that hasn’t produced any new material since 1999 is within its rights to sound a little dated – but the show wasn’t the nostalgia trip we wanted it to be, either. After an intolerably long soundcheck, the Rentals tore...

It's Tuesday, which means that your local DVD shop has several shiny new titles on the shelf. This week's biggest entry is James Mangold's Walk The Line, a Johnny Cash biopic in the mold of Ray that is up for five Oscars this weekend. The film wisely steers clear of a wide-scope biography, and instead concentrates on Cash's romance with second wife June Carter, his early music career at Sun Records, and his struggles...

While Austin begins to define itself as the "new American film capital", the exhibit opening Saturday at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum celebrates the past 100 years of filmmaking statewide. Texas Movies will cover the spectrum of Texas film history from the earliest productions companies and film footage to contemporary Texan directors, such as Wes Anderson and Robert Rodriguez. The exhibit honors homegrown filmmaking with artifacts from over 80 films made in Texas,...

Last Thursday, the Maui Film Festival awarded Andrew, Owen, and Luke Wilson with a Shooting Star Trophy for their most recent film, The Wendell Baker Story, which the festival describes as "inspiring." Wendell Baker was filmed almost entirely in Austin a couple of years ago. We remember watching the brothers (and Will Ferrell!) film some scenes in Hyde Park and we remember being star-struck. At the time, we were hopeful for a great movie....
