Six months ago tonight was the most memorable time I've ever had at the movies. It was Weird Wednesday at the Alamo Drafthouse, and Lars Nilsen was showing Carnival Magic, which I will attempt to summarize: a wise-but-creepy magician and his English-speaking chimpanzee achieve stardom in a small-time circus, only to become the prey of a girlfriend-beating lion tamer and a doctor who specializes in vivisection.
Radio IST List: An Interview with Lars Nilsen of The Alamo Drafthouse
Weird Wednesday Preview: Werewolves on Wheels
Werewolves on Wheels plays out like the perfect jumbled mix-up of the early 1970s film scene. It's got the fetishized American open road lifestyle, an obsession with the occult (this is the decade of The Omen and The Exorcist, after all), and it's powered by naturalistic hippie dialogue one could easily see coming out of Dennis Hopper's mouth. It's surprisingly-well shot and paced, taking its time moving through its anthology structure while punctuating its moments of horror with bright red blood splatters and slow-motion that Argento would've been at home with.
Weird Wednesday Presents Hollywood High
If you’re planning a date for this Wednesday and don’t want to fork out the cash for a new release, then why not go to Weird Wednesday? This week, the Alamo Drafthouse is featuring the perfect summer flick to take a would-be mate. It’s called Hollywood High, and everything we’ve read about it says it’s a raging stink-bomb of a film, filled with loads of nudity and a script that will put all other 70s teen sex comedies to shame.
Weird Wednesday, In Blog Form!
Unfortunately, we generally have to wake up super early on weekdays, and we're too weak-willed to attend many midnight screenings (you don't have to tell us how lame we are... we're well aware). So we tend to miss out on a lot of great movies, and a lot of great lobby conversation.
Austinist Giveaway: John Gries at the Alamo
Tomorrow's screening of Real Genius with John Gries in attendance is totally sold out (*sad face*). But cheer up--you can still enter our contest for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the 9:45pm screening of Napoleon Dynamite AND a pair of pajamas autographed by Laslo Hollyfeld himself!

Music Mondays Presents La Brune Et Moi
Tonight, Alamo Music Mondays presents an encore screening of Philippe Puicouyoul's 1980 New Wave love story La Brune Et Moi. The story revolves around a hot young French girl who's desperate for punk-rock superstardom, and a rich businessman who tries his best to buy it for her. But of course, the underdeveloped plot is just an excuse to showcase a long list of French punk bands, including Ici Paris, Artefact, Astroflash, Edith Nylon, The Questions,...
