To say that Warpaint were on top of their game at La Zona Rosa Saturday night would be an understatement. The four women were sirens, as their hypnotic grooves and gorgeous guitar lines managed to seduce nearly everyone in attendance. The band was able to remain completely serious and laser focused during their ninety-minute set, yet Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa were all smiles and bubbly personalities when interacting with the crowd and each other. The band demonstrated a kind of chemistry that not even an odd technical glitch midway through their set could break, and it made for an experience that further confirms their status as a live force. more ›

The women of Warpaint know a thing or two about longevity. The band had been together a little over five years before their first EP Exquisite Corpse was released at the end of 2009. They immediately established themselves as a band to watch, thanks to their overall cohesiveness and their almost ungodly ability to create mood. That trend continued on last last year's equally excellent The Fool, a debut album of slow burning tracks that still have a sense of mystery and wonder well in to 2011. more ›

Freak folk trio Akron/Family claim to play "music for people who like boats." More than just a cheeky quip, that may be the easiest succinct way to describe the band's appeal- if you don't mind pitching back and forth a bit on the ride, you're in for a treat. Akron/Family's Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free landed on our top albums of 2009 with its gorgeous forays into Dionysian bliss. If you're not already familiar with Akron/Family's psychedelic field recordings, chances are you've come across their collaborations somewhere off the beaten path between Michael Gira, Angels of Light, and Do Make Say Think. Though notoriously difficult to pin down, Akron/Family's billowing anthems offer plenty of sing-a-long footholds and melodic high ground that promises to make tonight's show at the Parish a good old-fashioned romp of a gig. more ›
