Oceana, currently playing at the Vortex Theater, is a cross between Cirque de Soleil and Spongebob Squarepants. Okay, okay, no it’s not, though it does take place under the sea and features plenty of graceful and limber dancing, including some aerial work. And the costumes! The costumes! Really nice shiny, stretchy, shimmery job on the costumes! Bonnie Collum (writer/director) and Content Love Knowles (original music and lyrics) have joined forces to create one shell of a show. (Confession - performances about the ocean lend themselves so well to the urge to pun, that it’s nearly impossible to clam up. For instance, this musical features plenty o’ Merman, though no Ethel.)

Emo's has a strong, loud lineup planned for this evening, featuring veterans and newbies alike. Air Traffic Controllers has been a project of Gerard Cosloy's for almost fifteen years, and has mutated a significant amount of times.

Electronic Planet Ensemble's Spaceman:Dada:Robot is a sly meandering visual spectacle now running at the Vortex. Set against a loop of imagery, four musicians take us on an aural voyage at about 67,000 miles per hour, give or take a few.

With Beirut’s ads proclaiming, “Nudity. Sexually Explicit Material. Adults Only,” audiences might think they'll be seeing a titillating show. While there is plenty of nudity, it isn’t of the arousing sort. In this hour-long saga of love, lust and sexual deprivation, the actors (and real-life newlyweds) Patterson and Vogt-Patterson go at each other with a clawing intensity and emotional rawness that pulls you into their dark tale of doomed love.
