- As the Beijing Olympics moves into its second week, attention moves from the pool to the track. Local athletes who stood out during Week 1 included Ricky Berens, who was part of the US's thrilling win in the 4x200 freestyle relay; Kirsty Coventry, winner of three silver medals while swimming for her native Zimbabwe; Aaron Peirsol, who won a gold medal in the 100 backstroke and a silver in the 200; and Garrett Weber-Gale, who was part of the men's gold-medal winning 4x100 freestyle relay. And who could forget former Longhorn Cat Osterman, who pitched a no-hitter for the US women's softball team and has picked up two wins so far in the tournament.

This is the first in our Longhorn player profile series, leading up to the season-opening game on Sept. 1. The enduring images from Colt McCoy's first season as the starting quarterback of the Texas Longhorns are a study in contrasts. On one hand, there was the sight of him winging a school-record six touchdowns in a single game against Baylor and battling the snow and wind to put the Longhorns in position for a come-from-behind...
Sunday. Usually, a quiet, contemplative day in the Blogosphere. But not here in the Ist-a-Verse. Nonono! Just look below and see all of the wild and crazy stuff our staffs are up to. In Austin, bands are beginning to confirm for SXSW and the rumor mill is up and running. Good thing, too, because we all know how much Austinites love live performances. Austin also found itself in the national spotlight, with Longhorn Legend...
Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year today. After sitting on the bench and watching for the first month of the season, the Longhorn Legend finally got his chance. Once VY was given the opportunity to prove himself, he did what we all expected him to do – he danced, pranced, cajoled and lead his team to amazing victory after amazing victory, carrying the 0-5 Titans to...
We have long been fans of Vince Young. Even when he (allegedly) bombed the Wonderlic Test, we still had confidence that he could succeed at the next level. The guy is one of the greatest leaders and winners in the history of college football. After leading the Tennessee Titans to an amazing comeback win last week, and the franchise's most points in a quarter since 1961, VY is starting to show signs that he will be an unqualified success at the next level. Many predicted he would be good; some predicted he’d be great.
No one has had their fame stripped away from them in such short order as UT quarterback, Colt McCoy. The red-shirt freshman out of Tuscola, Texas had the enormously unfortunate job of replacing the most famous (and entertaining) Texas football athlete of the modern era--Vince Young. As that January 4th hangover started to wear off, Texas fans were uncertain as to who would replace VY during the preseason, McCoy or true freshman Jevan Snead....
In his first endorsement deal since leaving UT and going pro, Vince Young was today unveiled as the latest poster-child for national debit card company NetSpend.
Texas may be trotting out a freshman quarterback (Colt McCoy) for the first time in years, but the team is still extremely solid. The defensive line may be the best in the country, the wide receiving corps may be the deepest in school history and, despite the fact that another UT running back (Ramonce Taylor) had a run-in with the weed over the off-season, the tailback position is well staffed, as well.
With the Third Choice in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans select Vince Young from the University of Texas. As speculated, Vince will be joining his mentor, Steve McNair, to play for the Titans. Vince grew up in Houston watching McNair break into the NFL and eventually developed a friendship with him as he got into his college career. "It's a dream for a young guy like Vince to have an active supporter like Steve McNair watching over him," Texas Coach Mack Brown said." Go Vince!! Of course, there is a great chance that McNair will be gone from Tennessee by the time camp starts, so get some good quality time in together now, fellas.
The NFL Draft may not be until this weekend, but Vince Young is already getting paid. Young has said all along that he is a Longhorn at heart, will always be a Longhorn and will always come back to Austin. This week he put his money where his mouth is when he signed a deal with local business NetSpend.
Vince Young has caught a lot of flack for hiring Major Adams, a family friend, to be his agent. One of the few cool people paying attention to the Stanley Cup Playoffs? There have been a couple surprising wins in round two of this series. We hope it stays this exciting. It appears LaMarcus Aldridge will follow in the footsteps of Longhorn football player Vince Young and leave UT early for the riches of the professional ranks. The Dallas Morning News is reporting that three sources have all said Aldridge will enter the NBA Draft. While Aldridge had an underwhelming performance against LSU in the Elite 8, most experts still expect him to go in the top-three come draft day. Aldridge averaged 15 pts., 9...
Vince Young faced some serious pressure yesterday. It wasn't the kind of pressure that 300-lb linemen from OU offer; it was greater than that, at least according to some. A collection of writers, scouts, NFL coaches and general managers and one NFL owner (Texans owner Bob McNair) came to the UT practice facility to watch Vince Young (and 17 other UT players) go through a series of workouts. All eyes were on Vince. According to most reports, he threw 57 passes, only four of which were off-target, and by most accounts impressed everyone with his speed, arm strength, accuracy, affability and ability to throw while rolling and out of numerous drop-step patterns. The links below provide some expert analysis from various writers about VY's day under the microscope.

For a young man whose collegiate career was defined by putting up 6s while leading his team to a national championship, it is certainly ironic that the same number now haunts Vince Young. Leaked reports coming from the NFL combine in Indianapolis indicate that the Maxwell Award Winner and Rose Bowl hero scored a paltry six on the Wonderlic test. But in all of our years of watching football, we have never seen a quarterback have to pass a multiple-choice mental aptitude test to win a Super Bowl.
A couple of years ago, some people were quietly rapping Vince Young for not having the intelligence to play the position in football that is most demanding on a player's smarts. All of those concerns seemingly went out the window as Vince took the Horns to an undefeated season and National Championship last year. Well, the doubters are back. Apparently (or allegedly) Vince scored a miserable 6 (out of 50) on the Wonderlic test...

As you are probably aware, Longhorn football great and friend of Austinist Major Applewhite recently moved back to Texas to take over as the Offensive Coordinator for the Rice University Owls. He has been busting his tail recruiting and helping to put in place a new offense that coaches hope will make Rice a very competitive team in the upcoming years. With national signing day behind him, Major was able to take some time out...
If you're a UT fan, you probably haven't gotten much done today. For the uninitiated, February 1 marks the first day that college football squads can accept signed letters of commitment from their top recruits. The events of today usually resonate two to three years down the line as the players mature and become starters for their chosen team. So with that said, it looks good so far for the Longhorns. Mack Brown may...

The Houston Texans seem poised to take Reggie Bush with the first pick in the NFL Draft. And while Longhorn fans who root for the doormats of the NFL might be pleading with the Texans to take Vince Young instead, they may want to reconsider. Apparently Vince Young has not hired an agent, leaving open the possibility of him returning to UT for his final year and the chance to go after back-to-back national championships. There is some speculation that if Young can not play for his hometown Texans he would rather stay and enjoy his final year of eligibility and being a total living legend in Austin.

The Longhorns finally had some quarterback recruiting news go their way this week. After losing Ryan Perriloux to LSU at the 11th hour last year and watching high school standouts Kyle Wright (Miami) and Bobby Reid (Oklahoma State) go elsewhere, the Longhorns had been in a bit of a funk with regard to getting a nationally-ranked QB prospect. That all changed a few days ago when Stephenville High QB Jevan Snead made an oral commitment to attend UT next year, leaving the Florida Gators crying in their beer. Snead is ranked as the fourth-best dual QB propsect according to Rivals.com, a recruiting website and the 78th-best high school player in the coutnry, regardless of position.
