Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Built By Snow + more

“Ever wanted to be a space ship pilot in an 8-bit Nintendo game?” With that subject title, the latest press release from local synth-pop outfit Built By Snow grabbed our attention well before we even ventured into deep space. The “rad dudes” rescue a princess in the brilliant video for “Underneath”, the first song on their debut EP Noise, eventually scoring cheeseburgers for their troubles. The video incorporates plenty of eye catching imagery and retro animation and the result is a hilarious conglomeration of pop culture influences. more ›

Never Kite Higher Than You're Willing To Fall

Never Kite Higher Than You're Willing To Fall

Last Friday, we thought we'd celebrate Chuck Norris Day by heading out to Lake Travis for some beer and boating. While we were out there, we noticed something a little risky, a little attractive and a lot stupid. Once our hands dried, we searched around the internet and were surprised to discover a new trend that has hit Central Texas lakes: Kite Tubing. Okay, the lake's not really our thing so maybe we're a... more ›

It's All Too Beautiful: 1960s Promotional Videos

It's All Too Beautiful: 1960s Promotional Videos

Before there was MTV, before there was access television showing crappy videos of crappy local bands, there was the Promotional Video. Sometimes beautifull, entertaining and of strong production value, sometimes handheld, dodgy filmmaking with band members tripped out on acid and running wild, these promo films were used by bands to get bookers to sign them and often times used as stand-ins for bands when they could not make their live television performances. Boy, and we thought Ashlee Simpson had duped a few folks. more ›
