EA Sports Looks to Austin for New Branch

EA Sports Looks to Austin for New Branch

It seems that COO of EA Sports, Daryll Holt, is in town this week scouting locations for a new studio spot for the franchise. An Austin studio would serve as only the second American location for the gaming giant, with the other stateside studio in Maitland, Florida (working in direct correspondence with EA Canada in Burnaby, British Columbia). With EA Sport's online presence growing every year, it's no surprise that they are looking to expand their workforce. EA Sports would be the latest of many game developers looking to harness Austin's draw as a city that attracts young talent. With California more inundated every day with tech companies, there aren't many viable technology hubs that are also attractive for young independent developers to get drunk in. This is why Austin was called the second silicon valley in the late 90's and early 00's with the influx of dotcom startups and computer hardware companies. Though the name didn't stick, and neither did most of the dotcoms there seems to be a second wave of technology companies calling Austin homebase. more ›

Monofonus Presents: Dry Hump The Video Game The Trailer

[NSFW] What exactly this is, we can't tell you, but have we watched the video three times, we can tell you yes. Monofonus, the Austin-based record label and multimedia organization released this trailer yesterday, supposedly for a video game in which you would control one of the avatars in some sort of dry hump battle? Sounds great. Even if it's not real, it's certainly worth a laugh or two. more ›

Art Preview: RESET/PLAY at the Arthouse

The more conceptual aspects of gaming are getting special notice with the Arthouse's newest exhibit RESET/PLAY. The show, which opens Saturday, explores the use of video games as a medium for the inspiration of contemporary art. The international cast of artists with work on display at RESET/PLAY were brought together by guest curators, Marcin Ramocki of Brooklyn and Paul Slocum of Dallas. Slocum is a new media artist who, among other things is turning 1985 vintage Epson printers into musical instruments. Ramocki also makes technology inspired art and co-created the documentary film 8 BIT which examines how video games have influenced contemporary culture. The Arthouse has teamed up with the Austin Museum of Digital Art to present various events related to the exhibit. Both guest curators will be at the Arthouse on Saturday at 3pm to talk about the exhibit. more ›

WWJF – Who Would Jesus Frag?

WWJF – Who Would Jesus Frag?

With increasing frequency, state houses around the country are fingering video games for a variety of societal ills. The most popular complaint is that violent games cause violent bahavior. While evidence of such claims is dubious, speaking out against games seems to be a popular pursuit, particularly for the more conservatively inclined among us. At least one student at North Greenville College, a South Carolina Southern Baptist liberal arts college dedicated to a "biblically sound,... more ›
