Ember Schrag, more at COTFG Residency Tonight [Show Preview]

While the adventurous folks at the Church of the Friendly Ghost usually plot their musical upheavals with the Salvage Vanguard Theater as their setting, on occasion they'll take their performances elsewhere. Such is the case tonight, where the Church will be working with the Art Seen Alliance to bring new music to the United States Art Authority. more ›

Happy Birthday, Woven Bones and More at United States Art Authority [Giveaway]

Happy Birthday, Woven Bones and More at United States Art Authority [Giveaway]

Brattleboro, Vermont might not be the first place that comes to mind when you hear Happy Birthday's catchy, guitar-driven pop - the small community is known for its vibrant local arts scene and chilly winters, if it's known for anything at all. But the trio, who last year signed to Sub Pop Records, craft pop gems out of sweet vocal harmonies, jangly guitars and alt-rock riffs. The band was slapdashed together for one show in late 2008 when guitarist and singer Kyle Thomas wanted backup for some new songs he'd written on his own. It went well: Sub Pop signed them four performances later. Their self-titled debut album came out in March on the heels of their first single, the eminently catchy "Girls FM". more ›

Weekend Music Preview: OxJam 2010 @ United States Art Authority [Saturday]

Weekend Music Preview: OxJam 2010 @ United States Art Authority [Saturday]

Per recent counts posted on Wikipedia, the earthquake in Haiti in January caused 230,000 deaths and left 300,000 injured. Nearly a million people are now homeless and the extent of the damage done to properties has also been colossal. This Saturday, a good chunk of our music community will come together to raise funds for the embattled nation. A who’s who of Austin (and San Marcos) talent will be on display at OxJam 2010 at the United States Art Authority -- Lions, Tia Carrera, Ringo Deathstarr, The Lemurs, and Michael Kingcaid are just a few of artists set to perform at the benefit. A silent auction (SXSW Film wristbands, VIP passes to Austin Psych Fest #3, etc.) is also a part of the evening’s schedule. All proceeds from OxJam 2010 will go towards Oxfam International’s Haiti initiative. Doors open at 5pm and cover charge is $8. That’s right. You just need to sacrifice your next King Kebab from Kebabalicious to contribute to this worthy cause. more ›

Five Things! Features Fractured Fables Friday Night

Five Things! Features Fractured Fables Friday Night

Morality can be hard to navigate. Hearing words like greed, inequality and hostility as descriptions of the processes of donating, health care, and partisanship can easily throw our ideals off course. These are the moments when it's appropriate to revisit Aesop; when Picasso's words ring true: "the essential in this time of moral poverty is to create enthusiasm," which is exactly what Austin's Five Things Reading Series plans to do. Happening this Friday, March 5 at United States Art Authority, five inspired writers will read newly rendered fables to help us get our morals back on track. Or at least embrace our deficiency. more ›
