This afternoon at Uchiko, C3 and Food & Wine announced the schedule for the inaugural edition of the Austin Food & Wine Festival, which will be held from April 27-29. The festival replaces the much-loved but often financially challenged Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival. C3 engaged chefs and restauranteurs Tyson Cole (Uchi), Tim Love (Lovesome Dove, Ft. Worth), and Jesse Herman (La Condesa) as partners in the festival, and each of those restaurants is featured prominently on the event schedule.
Food: Austin Food + Wine Festival Announced; Morimoto, Zimmern, Waxman + More To Appear
Food: IACP's Three Hot Chefs Tomorrow At Hotel Saint Cecilia
As the IACP Conference approaches this week, Austin's streets will be teeming with chefs, writers, and restauranteurs eager to network, sightsee, and eat. The first of many notable events occurring this week is a charity dinner for The Culinary Trust (which provides both scholarships and grants for entering culinary students to attend culinary school and donates toward hunger relief causes) with three of the conference's biggest names.
Food & Wine Magazine And C3 Announce Austin Food And Wine Festival
Austin's pants just got a little bit fancier. Food & Wine magazine has adopted Austin as the next destination in its series of internationally renowned food and wine festivals, which means we'll join the likes of the Aspen Annual Food & Wine Classic and The New York City Wine & Food Festival.
C3, producers of the Austin City Limits Festival and Lollapalooza, are joining with award-winning chefs Tyson Cole (Uchi) and Tim Love (The Lonesome Dove Western Bistro), as well as restaurateur Jesse Herman (La Condesa), to put on the Austin Wine & Food Festival, which will take the place of the 26-year-strong Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival.
Food + Drink News: Whole Foods/Greenling, Uchi, 24 Diner
Tyson Cole is a smart chef. To encourage pre-orders of his new Uchi: the Cookbook, Cole is throwing a VIP book signing on March 1 at Uchiko...with complimentary passed dishes straight from the pages of the new tome. If you're interested, head to uchicookbook.com for more information. The new book retails for $39.95 and was co-authored by Texas Monthly and Fodor's contributor Jessica Dupuy.
They're On Award Tour: Uchiko + Local Baker Barrie Cullinan Win National Honors
Local baker Barrie Cullinan has baked some of your favorite breads, even if you might not realize it: Cullinan is formerly of Vespaio, and now bakes and delivers bread to La Boîte Café, Antonelli's Cheese Shop, Jo's Coffee, and Royal Blue Grocery. Her creations are also the house breads at Eastside Show Room and David Bull's brand new Second Bar + Kitchen. In the upcoming January 2011 issue of Bon Appetit, writer Andrew Knowlton names Ms. Cullinan one of the "Top 10 Best Bread Bakeries in America," which is quite an accomplishment - especially for someone without a retail storefront (yet). While there will be a retail spot at some point in 2011, in the meantime, it's nice to know that our cheesemongers, chefs, and grocers have such an eye for locally-sourced artisan products.
Food: Tacodeli opens on North Lamar, Uchiko to follow
There seems to be some confusion about the why and wherefore of Tacodeli. So, to offer a clarification: Tacodeli is not a hybrid eatery where you can get black beans with a side of pastrami. Tacodeli is, however, an exclusively Tex-Mex breakfast-thru-lunch taco bar with three locations in Austin. The third location quietly opened this month on North Lamar, right across the street from Central Market.
Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival Interview: Tyson Cole of Uchi and Uchiko
You're probably familiar with Tyson Cole, one of Austin's best known chefs and Executive Chef at Uchi. You probably also know that he's hard at work on his second restaurant, Uchiko, which will be located at 4200 North Lamar. But did you also know that he's working on a cookbook? And aren't you kind of curious as to what his favorite places to eat in Austin are? The answer might surprise you!
Interview: Tyson Cole of Uchi [Food & Wine Fest]
Starting out as a dishwasher at Kyoto, Cole has made a name for himself in the sushi world beyond the city's borders. In 2005, two years after Uchi's opening, Cole was named one of Food and Wine magazine's prestigious Best New Chefs, and last year the chef took on his idol Masaharu Morimoto in battle ginger on Iron Chef America.
Austinist Interviews: Chef Jeff Blank of Hudson's On The Bend
We sat down with Blank one morning at Hudson’s last week - sunlight filtering in through the wine glasses which stood at silent attention during these rare peaceful moments before the deliveries and phone calls begin, and long before the first customer touches lip to fork. Despite his multiple accolades, you will find no pretention here: Blank emerges from the kitchen, suntanned and smiling, to sit down and chat with Austinist in the midst of the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival.
