When you see Damien Brockmann strolling down Congress Avenue, tip your hat, or at least offer a salute nestled somewhere between the Queen's wave and Truman Capote's famed fingers-to-forehead wrist-flick. Why? Because Citizen Damien has been tirelessly laboring to rescue America from its fekockteh political scene. Lucky for us, he's intent on saving Austin first, and doing it by offering up a new website called BillHop.com. A wiki/blog/safe haven for political junkees, the site tracks...
The Revolution Will Be Computerized: Austinist Interviews BillHop.com Creator Damien Brockmann
Movie Review: Infamous Plays Joe Frazier to Capote's Muhammad Ali
There is little doubt that a character of Truman Capote’s magnitude provided enough material with his behavior and complexity to source two major motion pictures. Regardless, it is rare to see two movies come out within a year of one another telling similar stories in very different ways.
AFS Sneak Preview: Infamous
Some people may shy away from Infamous, thinking there is no need to see two movies in one year about the complex character of Truman Capote. That would be a mistake. This film is getting favorable reviews, which is quite a feat considering it must compete in the shadow of a virtuoso performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the first biopic. And, the movie was filmed in Austin. So what more do you want? How...
Six Austin-Lensed Films Hitting Theatres This Fall
Despite Austin's population of just 700,000, there is no denying that we have become the regional hub for film and television production in the Southwest. In fact, no fewer than six films shot in Austin will hit screens between now and Thanksgiving. If you're curious about what those trucks near the Capitol building and at Texas Chili Parlor have been up to, or simply want to support locally made films with your movie dollars...
In Case You Missed It: The Week in Review
We reviewed Not Clown. Hilarious!. So much good music this weekend. You wouldn't have believed it if you didn't read it here. We might be the best blog in town, but there are plenty of other great ones out there. Jason McElwain, hoops legend. The feel-good story of the year (with video). The Texas re-districting battle takes to the Supreme Court. Round Rock Express tickets went on sale. The Great Mundane prepares to bring...
Austinist's Top 14 Movies of 2005
We spent an inordinate amount of time going to movies, shoveling buttered popcorn into our trawls, and drinking Mr. Pibb through red vines (Watch this SNL clip we just referenced if you want to laugh. Crazy funny.) Well, just like with our illegitimate children, we refuse to name favorites, so with that in mind, Austinist presents to you our favorite 14 films of 2005 in no particular order. *UPDATE: A late editorial note, at...
I Pity the Fool Who Can’t Find the Nearest Starbucks
Tired of bumping around town in your luxury ride, trying desperately to find the closest Rudy’s barbeque or Thundercloud Subs and having to listen to that generic female voice on your GPS? Don’t you wish you could have Burt Reynolds or Mr. T give you directions with the requisite sass? Yea, us too. Well, the wait is over, apparently. Navtones car navigation system produced by Los Angeles-based Wanderlust Media and digital map and location content provider Tele Atlas have combined to bring you celebrity-voiced navigation systems. Single celebrity voices will cost about $10 to download online, while unique character-themed voices — think of a generic surfer dude, or a cowboy — will cost about $5 each.
Every Word Is True
We have a friend in LA who thinks that they would never be able to find a job in Austin working in the film industry. We keep telling her that she should make out with us she's wrong and that there is a quickly growing industry here, but we've never had any good evidence to point to.
