Of my many character flaws, one of the greatest is my inability to let go, even when letting go is so clearly the only truly healthy thing to do. But I am ferocious about relationships, wanting to hold on, to take any measure possible to keep in my life that which is no longer mine for keeping. And so it is, once again. I reflect on my time together with him—the long walks, sleeping together night after night, telling him favorite stories, laughing at him in some of the ridiculous outfits he sometimes wears. I grasp for memories of all the good times and try to push away how over the past few months he snapped at me in a way that was actually dangerous. I try to ignore this and other signs that the end is imminent, and that even if I refuse to let go, he is going to leave me anyway. And no matter which way it goes, I will be left with a grief that I feel desperate to bypass. Because I know grief, know it far too well, and grief is bloody motherfucking hell.

Just moved out of the family house and feeling lonely? Living in an apartment that won't allow dogs? Maybe you need a cat. Throughout the month of July, the Austin Humane Society and Town Lake Animal Center have lowered the adoption fee for cats to $35. This fee covers vaccination, microchipping, de-worming, flea/tick treatment, as well as spay/neuter procedure (if applicable). At this low cost, how can you pass this deal up? Even some...

At tonight's meeting, the Animal Advisory Commission will discuss a proposal to move Town Lake Animal Center to 7201 Levander Loop (near the intersection of 183, Airport Boulevard and East First). We like the current location and it doesn't seem like major repairs are needed (at least to the part where they keep the cute little doggies), but Health & Human Services Department Director David Lurie, who has recommended the new site, says the...

Who could abandon a face like this? A whole bunch of us apparently could, and do. Austin's Town Lake Animal Center alone takes in about 40 dogs per day, some 14,000 per year. And those lucky dogs who are deemed acceptable adoption candidates - around 50% - often face re-abandonment by their new owners. If they're adopted at all. Nationwide statistics are even more startling: about 4 million dogs enter shelters every year, and about...

Too little too late
The city is trying to restore some jobs in Austin, as many were lost because of budget cuts since 2001. But, Austin just made panhandling legal in all areas of town...so, who needs a 9 to 5 working for the man when you can make make $500/day tax free off all the people with their commuter coffee mugs and brown bag lunches? These same workers will end up paying more in taxes and water bills if the "investment" in the city happens. Suckers! [Statesman]

In the News Today:

After the contributor round up last night, some of us new initiates headed over to one of our favorite downtown spots The Velvet Spade. We were just sitting there, minding our own beer when a POLAR BEAR walked through the door. He sauntered casually through the front room, did a round of the place and then came back to the bar where he nestled right into the crowd. After confirming that no one had slipped any hallucinogenic substances into our beer, we learned that it was just Duncan, Austinite Jacob’s beautiful Great Pyranees.
