Fun Fest Artist Profiles: The Strange Boys and Torche

Local heroes and In The Red-signees The Strange Boys will bring their 60s pastiche and summer fun party vibe to Fun Fun Fun Fest’s yellow stage on Sunday afternoon. While The Strange Boys do seem to fit into the lately omnipresent, and as some may argue, moribund lo-fi garage pop genre, they also manage to transcend many of their contemporaries.

Le Diamant Brut: Fun Fun Fun Fest Edition w/ Russian Circles & Torche

What’s the Deal: Not to knock musical threesomes or anything, but when one makes themselves sound like there’s a lot more going on than just a guy on guitar, a guy on bass and another on drums they stick out from the pack. Russian Circles have been called post-metal and post-rock, but really they’re a thick, evolving, expanding instrumental group making the most out of their equipment, drawing forth everything from metallic chugs and thrashes to flickering chimes and climactic cymbal crashes. Fun Fun Fun Fest this year will welcome the Chicago group as they tour in support of their third album, Geneva.

And here they come, one of the very few modern rock bands capable of opening for death metal bands while still receiving perfectly legitimate Foo Fighters comparisons.

Images of bears, rhinos, dinosaurs and even monsters with generous genitalia adorn the band’s t-shirt catalog, and they’re friends with groups like Mastodon, Mogwai, Kylesa and Municipal Waste on their MySpace page. And, their newest full-length is called Meaderthal, so, judging from that information alone, you should be able to make a pretty accurate judgment as to whether or not this is a band you can rock out to.

Supporting what is undoubtedly one of the finest metal albums of the year (Hydra Head's Meanderthal), Torche will perform at Red 7 tonight.
