Time Warner, in an attempt to make more money off the internet (which the UN declared a human right), is now offering "Wideband" service for $99.99
when bundled with other Time Warner Cable services, natch. Thing is, Wideband is simply a clever marketing term for greater working bandwidth in your home (i.e. wider-bandwidth). This particular upgrade would be offered on top of TWC's $64.99 Road Runner Extreme package; the price scheme involved should be familiar to anyone who has gone to a third party for web hosting services and seen the vastly different prices between storage brackets.
Time Warner Unveils Wideband Internet for Central Texas
If You Missed it at the Alamo, Collapse is Available in Your Very Own Living Room
Since there were only two screenings of the terrifying documentary Collapse in Austin, we thought we'd let you know that if you have Time Warner Cable (yes, queue the grumbling) you can catch it in the comfort of your own home on Channel 1000 (the Movies on Demand channel). It will be available until March 2nd in the "Indies" section, and we highly recommend that you see and it then go visit these guys to start stocking up on organic seeds for the coming destruction-of-civilization-as-we-know-it.
KXAN + Time Warner = Friends Again
Now NBC fans on Time Warner can watch the election results next week, and the season premiere of 30 Rock tomorrow night, on KXAN. KXAN announced earlier this morning through Twitter that the channel was once again available to Time Warner cable subscribers. So no more Tuesday lunch dates with Chuck via hulu, and no more needing to spend every Thursday night at the Alamo because otherwise you couldn't see the funniest comedy on TV that night (although the season premiere for 30 Rock was posted a week early on the internet). Phew. [KXAN on Twitter]
It's Town Hall Meeting Time!
Today both the Clinton and Obama campaigns announced upcoming town hall meetings. Obama's will take place tomorrow at the Austin Convention Center, while Hillary's sounds like more of a "virtual" town hall meeting - on TV the Monday before election day.
Upcoming FCC Decision May Make Your Cable Bill Cheaper
After strong lobbying from AT&T and Verizon, the FCC is expected to announce this week that cable companies won't have monopolies on certain apartment communities anymore. No longer will you be required to use a cable company that your complex signed a contract with if you want to get your Nip/Tuck or Burn Notice fix; such a contract between cable companies and apartment communities will no longer be allowed. Phone companies are happy because this...
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians Needs You, Today
The Health Alliance For Austin Musicians (or HAAM) provides local artists with low-cost health care and other related services. This year’s HAAM Benefit Day is here (today), and the organization is presenting numerous shows all over town this evening, along with a Telethon on ME Television. One can offer their assistance in funds by donating online as well. The HAAM Benefit Day is presented with support from a number of entities, including Whole Foods...

ME Television (Time Warner cable channel 15), Austin's local music video station, is gearing up for their own reality show which will be based on their nationwide search for two new VeeJays. The first set of open auditions takes place Thursday, August 30 in Austin. These auditions will be filmed for the reality series, which will start showing on ME in October. Duties of ME VeeJays include artist interviews, as well as coverage of...
Net Neutrality vs. Net Crappiness: Which Will Prevail?
People of Austin, patrons of the World Wide Web, you’re about to get ripped off! If you’ve ever rented a car, you know how this works. You don’t want the Mercedes, just something reliable that will provide the basic necessities. “I’ll take the Lincoln, please.” This seems like a good, mid-level choice. The clerk obliges and enters your credit card information. Then, with a plastic smile, she looks up and asks you: “Would you...
Arrested Development Back on TV
We haven't previously watched the G4 channel, because reruns of The Man Show and the channel's contemporary take on Star Trek haven't been enough to pull us in. Starting this week, however, we may be G4 converts. Last night they started their syndicated run of Arrested Development. Weeknights at 10:30pm, you can get back in touch with the Bluths and their shenanigans. If you have Grande, it's on channel 66 (expanded cable), or on...
Austinist Interview: Time Warner Mural Artist Careen Vaughn
Photo by Matt Wright South Austin resident Tracy Wolczanski, on her daily drive to Dell in Round Rock, passed a long, cinder block wall that runs the length of the Time Warner facility at South First and Stassney. It had been tagged here and there, had the potential for becoming a real eyesore, and was generally just causing her to think about its potential while sitting at the red light. In spring of 2005,...
AT&T vs EFF
Amidst all the posturing by the government regarding domestic surveillance (we’re not really watching you, just the terrorists), a Federal judge in San Francisco has quite progressively ruled that a case brought by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) would proceed despite the government’s request to toss key documents in the case on grounds of “national security.” "We're very pleased that the court refused AT&T's unreasonable demand that this critical evidence be returned to AT&T...
Basketball: Spurs Play Sonics Tonight, Toros Hodge Shot In Denver
Ray Allen is a sissy. We knew it back when Denzel kicked his ass in streetball in He Got Game, but it keeps going downhill from there. In 2001, Allen complained of an "NBA conspiracy" when his Bucks lost to the 76ers in the Eastern Coference Finals. This year, he has been involved in snippy altercations with LA's Kobe Bryant, Orlando's Keeyon Dooling (which merited a 3-game suspension), and of course San Antonio's Bruce...
Orange-White Scrimmage Saturday, No Foolin'
The annual University of Texas tradition known as the Orange-White Scrimmage takes place this Saturday afternoon. The Texas Football Spring Jamboree is set to begin at 4 pm with the Orange-White scrimmage kicking off at 6 pm. If you can't wait for the football season to come, or just want to have a great afternoon taking in some free fun, then head on down to DKR this Saturday afternoon. Admission to both events is free.
Basketball: Spurs Struggle (Again) On Back-To-Backs
If the San Antonio Spurs want to stay healthy for the playoffs, Austinist suggests they avoid playing the Denver Nuggets ever again. The Nugs are gaining some notoriety around the league for replicating the bruising style of the Knicks and Heat of the early 90's, and last night proved to be no exception. Tim Duncan got poked in the eye twice, Tony Parker was literally tackled on a lay-up, and Ginobili was thrown into...

John Mueller's BBQ Closes, Vows to Reopen Elsewhere
We've eaten so much brisket and pork ribs at John Mueller's BBQ on Manor Road that we should probably have an honorary diploma from Bovine University. Their delicious meat ranked very highly on our DSP (Deep Smoke Penetration) Scale. Sadly, they closed recently, owing to circumstances that are still "slightly unclear," according to Austinist informant Rosa - some suspect this might partly be Time Warner's fault. But, as it turns out, John Mueller's is...
