The Queen: Our Favorite Homeless Transvestite Has a Birthday

The Queen: Our Favorite Homeless Transvestite Has a Birthday

Last night, Leslie Cochran celebrated 60 years with a large group of friends and Austin celebrities at Threadgill's. Over the years, Cochran has been a fixture of Austin culture, a political force (he placed second in the mayoral race ten years ago), and an advocate for the homeless around the world. His story is as colorful as he is, but no matter where he wanders, we're always glad he comes on back. Despite many health concerns in the last year, Cochran was all smiles on Wednesday night -- perhaps because the spotlight is about to get even brighter with the filming of a documentary about him that's happening presently. Happy birthday Leslie - we love you enough to pay $5 for your app. more ›

Winner Winner Chicken (Fried) Dinner [Free Supper at Threadgill's North]

Winner Winner Chicken (Fried) Dinner [Free Supper at Threadgill's North]

As with anything this good, there are a couple of rules that go along with it: you can choose between Chicken Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken, Mississippi Fried Catfish, or a Vegetable Plate (Broccoli Rice Casserole!), the offer is only available at Threadgill's North location and you can only partake in their generosity one time (that means don't go all seven nights, people). Besides that, there are no strings attached, so we suggest that you get yourself over to 6416 North Lamar Blvd. between 4-10pm and get yourself a little gravy. more ›

Ryan Bingham Live at Threadgill's Sunday

Ryan Bingham Live at Threadgill's Sunday

Ryan Bingham's roadhouse inspired, whiskey and Pall Mall flavored brand of country grit has earned him praise well beyond the Texas borders. Rolling Stone, the BBC, Pop Matters and oodles of other publications have lauded his major label debut, Mescalito, and recent performances on The Tonight Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien have helped secure his name as a near-household utterance (at least for those folks keeping up with true Southern alt-country). Fans of Joe Ely, Steve Earle, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore rave about the youngster, just 26 years old, who sounds like an equally grizzled Tom Waits bloated on Lone Star and road stand barbecue. The music draws on influences in bayou blues, old school country, bluegrass and good old fashioned rock'n'roll. more ›

Food & Wine Festival Preview: Sample Texas Cookin' At Austin Uncorked & Acoustic

To shake up the sometimes stuffy image of wine festivals, local organizers of the Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival have added some late night events to this year's slate of tastings. To kick off the festivities, Threadgill's will host Austin Uncorked & Acoustic on Thursday, April 10th at 9pm. The key ideas are these: an outdoor setting, live music, a casual atmosphere, and great Texas food and drink. more ›
