Danielson, Jad Fair, and The Weird Weeds at The ND [Show Review]

Danielson, Jad Fair, and The Weird Weeds at The ND [Show Review]

Danielson was joined by The Weird Weeds and Jad Fair at The ND on Tuesday night as he and his new band celebrated the release of his first studio work in five years, The Best of Gloucester County. The evening was filled with uncommonly enchanting eccentric music. With some of Austin's most innovative musicians opening for him, including pioneering outsider artist Jad Fair, Danielson's audience was primed for his unusually creative and joyful performance. On a weeknight that was unusually full of enticing shows and events all across town, this was almost surely the most uplifting of them all. more ›

Celebrate YouTube's 4th B-day with the Church of the Friendly Ghost

Autobus Announces SXSW Showcase

Autobus Announces SXSW Showcase

>Local label Autobus records, who grabbed our attention this year with quite a few impressive releases, have announced their official SXSW Showcase for Wednesday, March 18th at the Hideout on 6th and Congress. While usually a venue for improv comedy and that sort of thing, the Hideout is surprisingly adaptable to live music, as attendees of the 2006 Orange Twin showcase (or subsequent SXSW showcases) can attest. more ›

New Release Tuesday: Weird Weeds

New Release Tuesday: Weird Weeds

Austin's own Weird Weeds spent seven months in the studio working on their latest full-length, I Miss This, and by their own admission, the effort asserted towards this record is by far the most intense in their history. One listen demonstrates their devout attention to detail in regards to both production and songwriting amply. "Red" oozes thick guitar dirges, sweetly tempered percussion and odes to Indian sitar harmonies (and carefully executed dissonance) with equal precision. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Toneburst 6

Arson may have damaged the studio that housed 91.7’s KOOP Radio, but they, and the Austin community at large, will be damned if they let the station go without a fight. Another benefit is happening this Saturday, presented by Church of the Friendly Ghost and Commercial Suicide, and taking the shape of Rick Reed’s 6th installment of the Toneburst series. Begun about two years ago, Toneburst is billed as “new and unusual experimental music from Austin and beyond...” and this will be its first show in The Salvage Vanguard Theater. more ›

SXSW 2007 Band List Update: As The Delay Grows Eternal, We Bring You Over 500 Acts Playing The Fest

After taking last week off because we were sure SXSW would release their master plan, we now return as there seems to be no end in sight to the band list embargo. Many indie labels and some marquee acts have simply announced their appearances, as bands attempt to book routing shows in Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, or elsewhere to make their long drives worthwhile. The lack of info has started to get the press... more ›

SXSW 2007 Band Update: 340 Strong And Counting

Another week has passed, and somehow there's a full Coachella lineup available but still no official word from SXSW. The Austin Chronicle did report that the powers that be intend to issue an official list sometime next week, so in the interim, we bring you round three of our unofficial but quite accurate SXSW 2007 band list. Interesting additions this week include Sloan, The Pipettes, Apples In Stereo, The Rosebuds, Beach House, Robyn Hitchcock,... more ›

SXSW: 80 More Bands Confirm, And We've Got The List

As you sit in the snow, bored to tears with your second snow day, you may again wonder if the folks at SXSW have released their huge band list so that all good indie-yuppies have something to do later this week at work besides listening to that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah leak. Well, not so much. But thanks to the good people at Done Waiting and BrooklynVegan, some MySpace confirmations, a big stack... more ›

SXSW Rumor Mill: SXSW Hides (160) Band List, But We're Here To Help

SXSW Rumor Mill: SXSW Hides (160) Band List, But We're Here To Help

Last week, the Austin Chronicle reported that officials at SXSW are delaying the release of their huge band list. The rationale is that a late release will cut down on the rampant day party scene from last year since party planners won't know who is playing until late in the game. Given the unbridled love we have for day parties, we have our doubts about the effectiveness of these tactics, but that still doesn't... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: As Weird As They Wanna Be

It starts with the clang of a triangle, and then you’re off: The Weird Weeds take listeners on a surreal ride to an undisclosed location in their latest self-titled release. Bandmates Sandy Ewen (guitar/vocals), Nick Hennies (percussion/vocals), and Aaron Russell (guitar) strive to guarantee that no band has so aptly lived up to its own name before The Weird Weeds came into existence. The disc features ample loops, distortion, poly-rhythmic percussion, screeches, howls, and... more ›

SxSW: You're Worth It, So Go For FREE

Alright. It’s a bit late for you to be trying to get reasonable entrance into anything now. So, unless you’re willing to pony-up some serious duckets for a wristband/badge/handgun, you’re going to need an alternate plan to view/hear live music. For free. Throw free booze or maybe even some free food on there too. Fuck it! It's the SxSW 2006 Free-Day-Party-type Party Time. But you have to understand that the free day/night venues/parties must... more ›

Touring Shows Tonight: The Honorary Title at Emo's, Baby Dee at Cactus Cafe

Touring Shows Tonight: The Honorary Title at Emo's, Baby Dee at Cactus Cafe

One of our favorite bands from Brooklyn (we hear there might be a few over there) is rolling into town for an early show at Emo's. They're called The Honorary Title, and together with Limbeck, Koufax, and Cory Branan (for Austin) they've embarked on a national tour so aggressive that someone saw fit to create a Myspace account just for it. A while back they released Anything Else But the Truth, a fiesty album of... more ›
