And a very happy 4/20 to all of you, indeed. For those of you who are out-of-the-know (or too "square") to know what we are talking about, today is the day when stoners of the world unite to celebrate the unofficial marijuana holiday. Urban myths abound about why marijuana smokers refer to 4:20 as the international pot-smoking hour. Some believe the number relates to the California police code for a marijuana bust; others say...

This Friday at the Velvet Spade, quite possibly the greatest literary rock star on the planet returns for a one-off reunion show with his Neal Pollack Invasion. Pollack, author of the seminal piece of satirical literary journalism, the Neal Pollack Anthology of American Literature (an Austinist favorite), left our fare shores last year to move to the moral abyss that is Hollywood. But he is back this week to help celebrate the launch of...

We'd like to say thanks to everyone who came out to our Local Music Is Sexy party last night and made it a mind numbingly huge success. We love all of you, and hope you had as good a time as we did. We'd also like to thank Trojan Condoms for their support (and the 4000+ free condoms!), Sumo for the beanbag chairs, The Daily Juice, Music Lab, DJ Shane, Peel, The Interest Kills, The Visitors, Belaire, The Black Angels, and The Velvet Spade for working with us to put on such a fantastic party.

Accuweather reports that we're not going to have rain tomorrow night, so the Local Music Is Sexy party will proceed as planned! We will see you at The Velvet Spade, tomorrow night!

This weekend you will have your choice of ways to help out Austinist's favorite charity, Safeplace.

You Love Me Not, an art show and lingerie soiree, is being held at The Velvet Spade this Thursday (May 5). Their will be music by NickNack, Ephriam Owens, Chrissy Du Paw, and John Gomi. There's a long list of artists who will be showing art, and a live performance installation by Broke. The art reception starts at 9 and goes til 11. And here's the important part: free wine and martini specials! Wee!...

Aaron Behrens, a lanky, long haired fellow, dressed in a tight teeshirt and tight white pants, and Thomas Turner, tall, smoking, and drinking an unknown beverage out of a bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag, are sitting in my back yard. They're both wearing sunglasses, because they are in a band, and that's how it's done. We talk about music, and Austin, and good omens. The band is called Ghostland Observatory. They play...

It's a sign that we live in a good town that, halfway through the week, there are a bunch of new things to do that we want to share with you. There are so many things happening in the next few days that we're having a hard time deciding what to do. That is a lie. We're going to go to see Ghostland Observatory on Thursday night at The Velvet Spade for the Fischerspooner CD...

The post-SXSW music lull keeps our list of recommended night time activities a bit sparse, but with a CD release party that's sure to turn into dance mayhem, a local rock showcase of talented men in bear suits, and a show by a band who sings about shipping routes in the 1700's, we think you'll find something to do. As usual, if there's a show you think is notable that we've forgotten, drop it in...

After the contributor round up last night, some of us new initiates headed over to one of our favorite downtown spots The Velvet Spade. We were just sitting there, minding our own beer when a POLAR BEAR walked through the door. He sauntered casually through the front room, did a round of the place and then came back to the bar where he nestled right into the crowd. After confirming that no one had slipped any hallucinogenic substances into our beer, we learned that it was just Duncan, Austinite Jacob’s beautiful Great Pyranees.

Anyone who has been to SXSW before knows that you can easily suffer from band scheduling overload. Looking at today's schedule, there are a virtually uncountable number of bands, and that doesn't even include all of the day time showcases and unlisted events. What to do?

After the HandShake party, Austinist will be heading to the Frog Design party - 8 to 10 at 804 Congress. This is a badge only event, which means free booze!

Just in time to be a few days early for SXSW, brand spankin' new band Peel is having their debut concert at Redrum on Sixth Street. If you're a fan of indie rock bands that feature cute female keyboard players and cute female bass players who wear braces, this is a band for you. The band also features the rock and roll stylings of hometown hero, Dakota Smith, who plays guitar for the group.
