Images of bears, rhinos, dinosaurs and even monsters with generous genitalia adorn the band’s t-shirt catalog, and they’re friends with groups like Mastodon, Mogwai, Kylesa and Municipal Waste on their MySpace page. And, their newest full-length is called Meaderthal, so, judging from that information alone, you should be able to make a pretty accurate judgment as to whether or not this is a band you can rock out to.
Le Diamant Brut: Torche & The Unbearables
Til We're Blue Or Destroy, The Corto Maltese @ Beerland
Look no further than Beerland Saturday night to find some of Austin’s most interesting fledgling indie bands. Headlining is Til We’re Blue Or Destroy, a 9-piece communal rock group utilizing every sound at their disposal. That means occasional horns, digital sounds and synthesizers, vibes, cross-gender choruses and even electronic vocal effects. They could use some wood blocks though. Just a thought. Then, there’s The Corto Maltese, who already gain major points for naming themselves...
Austinist Show Preview: The Unbearables and Ringo Deathstarr at the Mohawk
The Unbearables brought their rock-opera concept to Dougherty Arts Center last year in the form of Bitten! A Zombie Rock Odyssey. Although we were unable to catch that spectacle, the assorted jams on the band’s MySpace page have us day-dreaming about the possible storyline. The band brings its catchy pop and witty lyrics to the Mohawk tonight for what promises to be a grand ol’ time. Supporting the bill are local shoe-gazers Ringo Deathstarr and Yellow Fever. The former should appease fans of the Jesus and Mary Chain with their brilliant noise-rock while the latter specializes in simple yet alluring pop. Julian Decided kicks things off at 10 p.m.

Friday at Club Deville: Bands and Booze
Austin’s got a new agent all up in the local scene’s Artist Management: Bueno Music Bureau. And Bueno’s got some local talent that they think you should be bragging to your friends about listening to. Something like that. So they’re having a little thingy-thang at Deville this Friday (tonight, for most readers) to showcase that talent. There will be some doin’s-a-transpirin’. Specifically: four bands with their own instruments and haircuts for the pleasure of...
East Austin Bar Reopens
Several readers wrote in a while back about the possible demise of Red's Scoot Inn, the venerable East Austin bar built back in 1871. Some speculated that the historic space, where long ago "weary pioneers would roll their wagons in for a jug of beer, rations and perhaps some ice," would fall victim to the latest condo/loft development. Far from it. It turns out that the folks of the Longbranch Inn purchased the space...

That spells goldmine for me. First things first, ladies and...
Boo.
Welcome to the Halloween edition of This Week in Theatre, and the first time since we’ve been in Austin that some company hasn’t produced a play about mystical and spooky stuff to commemorate this festive occasion. So, in lieu of seeing a “horror” play this weekend—an event where busty blondes disappear for no reason, only to return later after a highly unfortunate series of events has stripped them down to their underwear; or, you...

Music Around Town, Tuesday: Laura Cantrell, Handsome Charlies + Ghostland Observatory, Karaoke at the Peacock
· Laura Cantrell performs two nights of her signature blend of country and folk at the Cactus Cafe. Her third album, Humming By The Flowered Vine, finds the Nashville-born singer again exploring themes of heartache, unrequited love and bittersweet nostalgia. "Letters", her cover of an old Lucinda Williams song, is particularly touching. As is "Khaki & Corduroy", which recounts her experience moving to New York and trying to find her way - she further articulates...

Austinist Interviews The Unbearables
The Unbearables are the kind of band you just want to like. Their members are shaggy and goofy, like characters from a Hannah Barbara cartoon. Their songs make you bop your head and tap your toes. They've just returned from a tour, and took some time out before their show tonight at Trophy's to answer some questions about their music, the tour, and guys dressed up in bear suits. Read the interview after the...
Local Boys Do Good, Part 1
We woke up this morning to find this e-mail in our inbox, in reference to the totally bearable The Unbearables:
It's a sock hop! The Unbearables at Red Eyed Fly
Austinist was in attendance at The Unbearables show last Friday at Red Eyed Fly. We've seen these boys perform a few times before, but it'd been a while since the last time. We have to say, we were pleasantly surprised. The Unbearables play music that falls somewhere between Weezer and The Beach Boys, if The Beach Boys were together still and writing songs about television shows and videogames. They have a lot of songs...
The IST LIST: Week of March 28
The post-SXSW music lull keeps our list of recommended night time activities a bit sparse, but with a CD release party that's sure to turn into dance mayhem, a local rock showcase of talented men in bear suits, and a show by a band who sings about shipping routes in the 1700's, we think you'll find something to do. As usual, if there's a show you think is notable that we've forgotten, drop it in...
