Back away from the leftovers and get your yayas on over to the Parish Room for an evening of music headlined by Little Joy. The band is a side project for Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti who is joined in this endeavor by Los Hermanos singer/guitarist Rodrigo Amarante, and Bikini Shapiro.

Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti's side project is one of those ventures that doesn't benefit at all from constantly being referred to as a peripheral occurrence. Moretti's Little Joy, with Los Hermanos singer/guitarist Rodrigo Amarante, is the love child of the pair's fast friendship, which came to pass at a Portuguese festival in Lisbon a year ago.

Although they may share neighboring shelf space in record stores and similar vowel sounds with the DC reggae/punk band, their music couldn’t be more different. These two blonde Cincinnati boys, Benjamin Davis and Sebastien Schultz, have come up with a fairly affecting mixture of perky pop and sweetly vulnerable indie rock. Well, to be fair there is a third member; she’s a 1973 reel-to-reel for playback of background mixes named Irene. They’ve built up a little steam recently on the music blogs, and of course they’re headed to Austin for SXSW.

“Don’t believe the hype,” Public Enemy warned us way back in 1988, and as on their eerily prescient “Cold Lampin’ With Flavor” which made the surprising case for Flava Flave’s longevity, they were right, of course. And hype, by definition, should always be suspect. From the moment Vampire Weekend, the quirky New York quartet began making the blog rounds and collecting the sort of adjectives that pointed their way toward them becoming The Next Big Thing, we, as a music community, needed to take a breath, sit down, and just relax. Losing our shit about inventive New York rock debuts are just going to result in another band like The Strokes, and we all know where that got us.
