The four impeccably coiffed lads that comprise local quartet The Steps have been playing around Austin for a couple of years now, and while they’ve already been exposed to the international music press and toured extensively, they seem to fly under the radar of music fans in their home town. Comparisons to The Strokes and The Stones are frequently lobbed at the band (and not without merit), and the members don’t necessarily discourage said comparisons, which are at least tacitly supported by their new EP and first official stateside release Take It All In. The EP sees the group further establishing their Strokes homage in style as well as sound, but you listen closely, The Steps appear to have more chutzpah than your garden-variety black-clad rock combo.

There’s no hiding from it -- SXSW will take over our streets starting this weekend. We don’t think you should have to wait until the official music kick-off on the 18th to take in some of Austin’s finest bands so we bring you Local Music Is Sexy 7 this Saturday at the ever popular Pure Volume House. (RSVP here -- 21+ only.)

They’re about a step from wide rock and roll popularity and leaving Austin behind. You may not know the band’s name because they’ve been relatively incognito in Austin, going almost unnoticed locally but drumming up a sizable following elsewhere in the country and abroad, far abroad, like Japan abroad.

Stick with Austinist all weekend for set reviews, photos and interviews from the festival. Things are already underway, and we'll be there to give you the inside scoop on your favorite performers like Stars, Yeasayer, White Denim, the Strange Boys, Jamie Lidell and much more.

Every once in a while a band manages to completely surpass the local initiation, breaking out into the national or international scene seemingly out of the blue. Though it's often the case that these bands -- despite well-educated marketing teams by their side -- fling themselves out into the wilds of pop fancy only to be thrown back home to local audiences who have never heard of them, it's not necessarily the rule.

Paggi House, a which new Austinist staffer Michael clued us into just weeks ago, is hosting ATX Fest this weekend.
