Creepy Crawly Cinema: Haunting Movie House Happenings

Creepy Crawly Cinema: Haunting Movie House Happenings

As far as ghosts and ghoulies go, we know that Austin has spooky entertainment options coming out the yin-yang, not to mention the standard trick-or-treating action. However, it has been brought to our attention that it is no longer socially acceptable for 20 to 30-somethings to beg candy off their neighbors (we have no shame), and our sexy bumblebee/sexy heart surgeon/sexy bottle of pepto bismol costumes are looking a little shabby this season. So... more ›

Austinist Interviews: Master Pancake Theater

Austinist Interviews: Master Pancake Theater

When news broke in January that Austin's preeminent team of professional movie hecklers, The Sinus Show, had called it quits, it was a dark day for fans of live comedy juxtaposed with bad movies. Fortunately, Sinus veteran John Erler and Sinus pinch hitter Joe Parsons are carrying the torch of hilaritude with Master Pancake Theater. Since we first talked to them in February, they've been busy lambasting such gems as Titanic and Mad Max: Beyond... more ›

Austinist Interviews Master Pancake Theater’s John Erler and Joe Parsons

A few weeks ago, we were saddened to hear that Austin’s long running, movie-skewering comedy institution, The Sinus Show, was calling it quits. But we were also incredibly happy to learn that Sinus alums John Erler and Joe Parsons would be carrying on the troupe’s proud, hilarious tradition with a brand new weekly show titled Master Pancake Theater. We recently had the chance to sit down with John and Joe over seafood to talk about... more ›

Breaking: Sinus Show Calls it Quits

Breaking: Sinus Show Calls it Quits

The rumors, it turns out, are true: the Sinus Show, Austin's beloved institution of comedy paired with really cheesy films, is calling it quits after six extraordinary years. Citing personal issues, the trio will perform their last shows--Diehard, ironically--tonight and tomorrow evening at the Drafthouse Downtown. In more bad news, all remaining performances are already sold out. From the Sinus Show guys: "After six incredibly fun years the Sinus Show is performing its last... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: Sinus Skewers Cruise in Top Gun

Austinist Giveaway: Sinus Skewers Cruise in Top Gun

The Sinus Show's next subject of ridicule is Top Gun, the classic 80's homoerotic romance-cum-action movie with big planes, big hair, and big bulges. It's queso mas grande by itself, which leads us to believe that it'll be completely over-the-top once the comic wizards at Sinus apply their treatment. more ›

Community Rallies Around KOOP

Community Rallies Around KOOP

Owing to the fire last week that destroyed most of the building housing KOOP's studios, the member-owned community radio station is being forced to relocate. At the modest downtown offices on Fifth and San Jacinto, built back in the 1930s, KOOP paid a mere $750 a month for rent. Now, strapped for cash and unable to cover relocation costs, they'll be having a slew of benefit events through the end of February. Meanwhile, the... more ›

A Frightful Evening with Owen Egerton and Michael Myers

The Sinus Show's Owen Egerton has cooked up something special for Halloween evening, Austinites. He will be presenting one of his favorite scary movies, Halloween 4 (yes, 4, you read that right), for horror fans, those without a party to attend, and, well, Owen Egerton fans. While he won't be mocking the film, he will be sharing fun facts and presenting the film--with drafthouse decorating included. Mr. Egerton has this to say about the... more ›

Nice Guys Drive Orange VW Buses: The Owen Egerton interview

Nice Guys Drive Orange VW Buses: The Owen Egerton interview

Most Austinites will know Owen Egerton from The Sinus Show. But Owen Egerton is also the guy behind those popular sing-a-longs at the Alamo Drafthouse, as well as a writer, musician ("My Sister's Thyroid" is one of his song titles), recent MFA graduate, and now a daddy. He's also active in the National Comedy Theatre of Austin and is even ordained to perform weddings. We think Owen is definitely a modern renaissance man. After... more ›

Sinus Strikes Again!

Sinus Strikes Again!

Rejoice, Austinites! One of our most esteemed local entertainment staples has returned after ... a period of time when they were gone. Those wild ‘n crazy guys of the Sinus Show are bringing back their lawsuit-worthy antics (apparently it’s all legal now) this Friday. Join them as they skewer the 1984 relic Red Dawn, starring mega hunks Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. According to IMDb, this movie is about a group of Midwestern high school students who organize themselves into a guerilla force to fight off invading Soviet armies at the outbreak of World War III. more ›

Improv! Music! Family Feud! Fun! Wheee!

Swing by the Carousel Lounge (1110 E. 52nd St.) tomorrow (April 19th) if you wanna laugh yer ass off. Improv comedy troupe TIGHT is performing, along with some musical accompaniment from The Sinus Show’s Jerm Pollet, the Elastic Waste Band, and the Total Foxes. The show starts at 9pm and will be followed by a cuh-razy game of Family Feud. We doubt Richard Dawson will be there, but word on the street is that a... more ›

Breaking News! Alamo Drafthouse Takes Over the World

If you still think Austin is a small town, you're wrong. Austinist is here to tell you that Austin is a big city now because why the heck else would we have four Alamo Drafthouse cinemas? Not that we don't love them, we do. Where else can you watch Korean horror films on the big screen while eating a mixed green salad and some chips and queso? 1120 South Lamar used to be a City Market, then it was a Fiesta, but now it is officially Alamo South Lamar, though we like to call it Alamo Big Red, or just Big Red, for short. And we are very pleased to inform you that Big Red has stadium seating. Good news for Prince! more ›
