The question of whether or not Austin is the "cool place it used to be" has been a popular topic of discussion around these parts of late, and indeed ever since Austin begin headlining lists of Best Place to Live/Work/Play/Be Young/Start a Business/Etcetera. But aside from semantic and ideological arguments about the meaning of "cool" or the oft-repeated lamentation that Austin just isn't the same as it used to be, man, it's undeniable that as our city moves forward in the 21st century, it's going to have to balance the increased visibility and idealized status that come with being a "desirable place to live" with the understanding (both financially and culturally) that it has been a pretty damn good place to live for a long time. Any place that attracts sustained favorable notice from without its borders will have to find ways to integrate the influx of new ideas and infrastructure - change - while maintaining some semblance of what made it a unique environment in the first place.
Closing Time for the North Loop Parlor [Show Preview]
Weekly Music Picks - Now With Less Pizza
Out there in real-world land, quite a few of you haven't heard that the Parlor on North Loop is closing. It is, but not before a big celebration. In particular, Sunday night features Jerri Sinfeld's Atrophied Sac, ST 37, Foot Foot, Book Of Shadows, a project called Not Daniel Johnston, Destroyed For Comfort, and many more.
Austinist Reviews Three from FronteraFest
The first piece, Port Arthur, written and directed by HPT artistic director Ken Webster, is a lovely, Texas-style cross between Sartre and Kids in the Hall, where a very small cast (two) in a very tight setting (bus seat), play out a very ancient theme (sort of David vs. Goliath). Larius Likler, the second piece, is slightly longer than Port Arthur, with a really strong cast of four. Seventeen year-old Austin High student Kayla Newman is an über-standout as Beluga aka Condom, the youngest of three children including her brother, who aspires to be a serial killer, and her reluctantly pregnant, wisecracking sister. Their runaway mom checks in via voice mail while dad has a hard time keeping things together.
Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Beard & Moustache Competition + Valentine Prom Extravaganza! + more
Emo’s, as always, powers our evenings with a good amount of solid shows this weekend. Zookeeper and Zykos bring heartfelt indie-rock to the outside stage on Friday while Ume and Haunting Oboe Music take on the inside crowd with belligerent, experimental rock n’ roll.
F*ed Up @ Emo's, Ringo Deathstarr @ The Parlor
First things first, people: enough of this “stop shilling Emo’s all the time” nonsense! You can shout “scene/lifestyle” all you want, but the fact remains that there just aren’t many clubs downtown that attract big-time touring bands and assemble kickass local bills for under $20. Case in point: tonight’s performance by Toronto avant-punks F*cked Up. The notoriously obscurist five-piece, who write 8-minute progressive hardcore anthems about things like anarchist computer hackers and the Chinese...

After spending the last few months installing the enormous 40-foot wall mural and finishing the rest of the swanky Mozersky-designed interior, South Austin rock 'n roll haircutters Birds Barbershop has its soft opening this weekend.
