C3 Presents, along with yours truly, is proud to bring one of the long standing purveyors of the Madchester music scene to Austin this October. Initially a part of baggy movement, The Charlatans U.K. have stood the test of time since forming in 1989. Multiple number one albums in the U.K. have guaranteed the band legendary status across the pond but they never quite reached that level of success in the U.S. Still, records like Some Friendly, Up To Our Hips, and The Charlatans are classics in our opinion, and having seen them at Liberty Lunch in 1997 and again at Stubb’s at SXSW 2006, we can attest to their astute musicianship and impressive live show.

Wit, charm, and an affecting voice aren’t the only things that Langhorne Slim (a.k.a. Sean Scolnick) has going for him. A penchant for addictive melody and the backing of talented duo Jeff Ratner and Malachi DeLorenzo (The War Eagles) further advance Scolnick’s wistful lyricism. And on record, especially 2008’s self-titled release on Kemado Records, Langhorne Slim’s brand of Americana is refined and accentuated by a variety of instruments like the tuba, accordion, and cello. Witnessing a spirited live performance by this hat wearing, guitar strumming troubadour puts a cherry on top of an already excellent offering, and we want to send you to the show for free! Enter your information in the form below for a chance to win two tickets to Wednesday’s show at The Parish. The evening of folk ditties kicks off with Samantha Crain & The Midnight Shivers and Sam Lowry & The Circumstance.

The endearing entity that is US Air Guitar was founded in 2003 and has since churned out three of the last six winners of the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu, Finland. Last Year, Californian Craig “Hot Lixx Hulahan” Billmeier took home the ultimate bragging rights in the world of invisible six-strings and he will return to Finland to defend his crown come August. Will you be the one to dethrone Hot Lixx Hulahan? Head to the downtown Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at 10 p.m. this Wednesday, sign up, and show off your skills in this third round of preliminaries taking place that evening at the magical arena that is the old Ritz.

Last night's Elvis Perkins in Dearland show at the Parish was a special treat. The crowd came early for Other Lives, a lush folk outfit from Oklahoma, taking their seats and (shockingly) listening quietly to the opening set. Other Lives performed a cover of Leonard Cohen's "The Partisan", which astounded us with its haunting instrumentation. Elvis Perkins in Dearland took the stage to an anxious crowd (by this point, many were seated on the floor in front of the stage), and rolled through some familiar songs from this year's self-titled release as well as a couple of new songs. For the encore, Other Lives joined them on stage for a blistering finale. Happy faces descended to 6th street by midnight, but the lingering joy stuck with us to the morning. Austinist contributing photographer Chad Wadsworth was there to capture it all.

Cheers to solid shows at the Parish! An ample bar stretches across the length of the East wall providing easily accessible drink-receipt stations, making transactions painless, even if you're as drunk as Lucinda Williams at jury duty. Moreover, the sound is spot-on and the woman behind the board is a complete mensch. If you're lucky enough to nail down a good lineup, you're sittin' pretty ATX-style.

Valentine’s Day weekend means plenty of roses, stuffed bears, heart-shaped confections and whatever else the greeting card industry and candy companies come up with to appeal to tender, romantic tendencies of the average American. It’s also the perfect time to take in some sonic sentiment, making the Annuals show at The Parish on Friday a better place than most to flex your love muscle (the other one).

Dark Developments is what you get when you combine the experience and oddness of the singer-songwriter Athens mainstay Vic Chesnutt with the power-pop punch of the underrated Elephant Six rockers Elf Power. Lead singer Andrew Reiger told us about the album during an interview we did with the band during SXSW, and with the album out on the Orange Twin label in mid-October, the two acts have embarked on a U.S. tour that extends to the end of this month.

The mysterious and (and mysteriously soothing) instrumental project Silent Land Time Machine will release its debut album &hope still in conjunction with a performance at The Parish alongside Silver Pines and Andrew Tinker, the latter being one of millions formerly in The Polyphonic Spree.

As you veer away from Red River St. to head west on 6th, you encounter a plethora of bars and clubs inviting you to sample their respective drink specials and indulge in their late night revelry. Sure, you can easily find the libation of your choice on either side of the infamous street, but for quality live music, you best head to the little oasis between San Jacinto and Brazos called The Parish Room. The venue presents Shiny Toy Guns on Thursday (tickets), The Walkmen on Friday (tickets), and The Rumble Strips and Birdmonster on Saturday (tickets). There’s no rest on Sunday either when the beloved Second Sunday Sock Hop brings a dose of its monthly shenanigans to The Parish.

For almost ten years, Shearwater have made huge strides as a progressive folk project that began with sparse, humble origins which has since blossomed into something altogether more intense and uplifting. They’ve also made Austin proud through a continued career of challenging and strikingly original material, not to mention the fact that they've given the seabird that inspired their name some much-needed attention.

Matador Records will release Shearwater’s fifth LP Rook on June 3rd but that isn't the only recent good news regarding the eclectic Austin act. The band is scheduled to play a number of cities in May including a couple of very special shows in New York and Austin. The New York gig on May 5th at the Florence Gould Hall kicks off the tour before the band makes its way back to Austin for a night at The Parish on the 29th. Both shows will feature a complete performance of Rook with accompanying strings, woodwinds, trumpets, and harp for our listening pleasure. Of course, some older material can be expected as well. You can read the official Matador Records press release here and buy tickets for the Austin concert here. The ticket price of $15.50 seems to be a steal for this exceptional event. And that’s not all -- a limited 7" that includes a cover of Talk Talk’s “The Rainbow” will be available at both shows. Bonus round!

Nice job, Weakerthans. While many bands just incorporate their SXSW stop as part of their national or international tour, not to return to our streets for many months (and trust us, we understand), these Canadian folk-punkers are returning to Austin just a scant two weeks after they visited us for the festival.

It's always great catching a band at their CD Release show, because you know they're going to be fired up and ready to bring it. And such is the state of this Thursday at The Parish Room, where Austin-proud The Boxing Lesson will be dropping their new disc, Wild Streaks & Windy Days, an unabashedly Pink Floyd-esque collection of psychedelic rock. With songs like "Muerta" and "Back from the Dead," they establish an eerily sinister tone that's ably coupled with songs nodding to their forebears, such as "Dark Side of the Moog."

SXSW has announced the schedule of events for this year’s official showcases -- start here! Also, check out Greg Hewgill's site for (unofficial) Torrents featuring the various artists playing SXSW 2008 (as well as past years).

The best klezmer-punk band you’ve never heard, Golem are a six-piece from New York who blend old-world Jewish music with a witty repertoire of modern influences. Debuting in 2001, the band really hit their stride in 2006 with Fresh Off Boat, a whirling collection of originals and traditional numbers (including their own version of the Hora, of course) sung in five languages.

The Mohawk presents a solid double bill of local pop this evening. The Lemurs have been writing new material over the last few months and a handful of those songs will be included in their set tonight. The band enjoyed a stellar 2007 -- highlights included licensing their music to NBC show Las Vegas (as well as an Australian indie flick called Newcastle) and touring with Canadian act Stars. This past Sunday, ME Television telecast a 2nd ME Live! featuring The Lemurs' shimmering melodies in concert at a recent La Zona Rosa gig.

In keeping with its aim of promoting exceptional artists to the unsuspecting masses, or “starting fires”, SureFire Media + Promotion presents an exciting line-up of local talent this Thursday at Antone’s. SureFire takes on responsibilities such as booking, publicity, and marketing for Austin acts with The Soldier Thread and The Mercers being just two of the bands on its roster. The Antone’s showcases are meant to bring a new set of local bands to the legendary venue -- according to SureFire’s Director of Media Relations, Stephen Tatton, “Antone's is really an Austin landmark, and I think that if we can do something there that helps everyone involved, then we've done our part.”

Rogue Wave plays to a sold out audience at The Parish in Austin, Texas.

Rogue Wave released their third full-length Asleep At Heaven’s Gate last year, leaving behind the safe haven of Sub Pop to find a new home at Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. The album itself found the band conjuring up a textured mosaic of pop harmonies and poignant lyrics with the aid of sufficient guitars and keys. “Own Your Own Home” and “Like I Needed” were two of our favorite sleeper tracks of the past year, while single “Lake Michigan” was a lush pop hit never to be heard on everyday FM radio. (Watch the video on YouTube.)

There is absolutely no reason to stay in on Friday evening. Whether it's DJ Shadow at La Zona Rosa or Future Clouds and Radar at The Parish, downtown offers you a wide variety of music to kick off your weekend.

Robert Harrison’s forte has always been melodious pop music and his current outfit Future Clouds and Radar is no anomaly. The act’s stellar self-titled album (out now on Star Apple Kingdom) contains boundless hooks and plenty of Beatles-esque psychedelia, and has garnered rave reviews from a plethora of publications such as HARP, Paste, Pop Culture Press, and No Depression. Check out the video for “Dr. No.” here.

Navdo is a record label that also promotes and books artists, and this Thursday they’re hosting their first “Hangin’ with Navdo” in Austin at The Parish, featuring Peel, The Boxing Lesson, and AM Syndicate. AM Syndicate will be celebrating the release of their second album, Liberation, recorded by Erik Wofford at Cacophony Records. This will be the first release put out by fledgling label Novastar Records.

Image provided by Soundcheck MagazineWhile attending the University of Texas at Austin, one faces a constant barrage of “the weekend starts on Thursday” type advertisements. Although largely for exposure of Thursday night drink specials at bars on 6th Street, the intrinsic appeal of that statement bleeds through on days like these. Kick off your weekend early (and gently) with Swedish singer-songwriter José González at The Parish or dance away at the Electric Six show at...
