The Best Things in Life, Alas, Smell Like Pee

As the showcases are all without cover, we'd recommend getting there early. Emo's Free Week January 2-8 603 Red River Tuesday, January 2 Inside:... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: Peter and the Wolf, The Interest Kills at Mohawk

Land, ho! Peter and the Wolf, that great ghost ship of a band both ephemeral and ceaselessly transient, is coming ashore tonight at the Mohawk. There has been much chatter in the musical grapevine regarding lead singer Red Hunter's penchant for choosing odd locales where he can present his music; luckily, for those of you afraid of cemeteries and canoe-less, a show at the Mohawk presents a chance to catch our most prominent bard... more ›

Revisiting LMIS I: Those Halcyon Days of Condoms Never-ending

Revisiting LMIS I: Those Halcyon Days of Condoms Never-ending

Tomas from The Interest Kills would like to remind you that the first time we tried this Local Music is Sexy thing, we had Trojan on board, which meant that we had more mint-flavored (or were they scented?) condoms than we, or anyone who attended, knew what to do with. What surprises are in store for this year's show is anyone's guess. With new sponsors comes new possibilities. Another shot of The Interest Kills... more ›

Austinist Interviews Stem and Leaf Records

Austinist Interviews Stem and Leaf Records

Marshall Escamilla and Emily Summerfield are the dynamic duo behind Stem and Leaf Records, Austin's latest indie record label that launched during SXSW Interactive earlier this year. This weekend, they're throwing a CD release show for The Interest Kills at the historic Victory Grill, with Happy Families, The Total Foxes, and Red Leaves ... and a spelling bee! We had a chat with Emily and Marshall this week, in advance of the show. Read on! So where'd you guys get the idea to start a record label? E: Well, one day I was talking to Marshall on the phone (this was when I was still living in Indiana), and he asked if I would like to start a record label. So there's that, but of course, there's more to it that just that. I love music but don't play any instruments, so I've always sort of secretly wanted to do something like this. M: I got the idea when I was watching a friend of mine play a show in Chicago while we were on tour. She was doing this really great stuff, and I knew that she wouldn't do much to support it. So I thought, "Man, I should start a label just to help her get her music out there." And then, my band came up with the idea to write a Zombie Rock Opera, and I felt like we needed to do something to get it the support it needed. So we started a label. And what are your backgrounds? E: We're both English majors. Marshall teaches, and most of my work experience has been in libraries. M: Yup. more ›

Peter and The Wolf, Castanets Tour By Sea!

Peter and The Wolf, Castanets Tour By Sea!

With national gas prices soaring past that dreadful $3-per-gallon mark, most of us at Austinist have had to rework our upcoming roadtrip plans. But what about our city's vast legions of musicians? Summer's a great opportunity for bands to get out for a bit of stateside touring, but it's hard enough for most indepedent artists simply break even -- especially when you've rented a jalopy of a gas-guzzling touring van to house all those damned... more ›

Stem and Leaf Records Celebrate Launch!

Stem and Leaf Records Celebrate Launch!

Ushering in this season's South By Southwest reveleries is a party celebrating the launch of Marshall Escamilla and Emily Summerfield's label, Stem and Leaf Records. In a short letter to Austinist, Summerfield described her label as seeking a musical partnership in which "the songwriting is earnest, and that is consistently true, whether the songs are about girls, zombies, historical figures or whatever." The production of each album will reflect aesthetic values from the vinyl era,... more ›

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: The Black Angels

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: The Black Angels

[In which we use the word fuck no less than three times. Well, four.] A few months ago, at a house party in Hyde Park thrown by local label Christmas Mountain Records, we found ourselves lounging idly with our mates on a plushly upholstered sofa, near the stage setup of a living room so sardine-packed with Austin hipsters that, in the dimmed lighting and from our low vantage point, all one could make out... more ›

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: Belaire

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: Belaire

Today we bring you the fourth band in our "Local Music is Sexy" Austinist + Trojan rock show/dance-party, happening this Saturday at the Velvet Spade: In the Discerning Confectioner's Cookbook for Delectable Indie Pop, the recipe for Austin's Belaire might read something like this: combine one part Parisian lounge act, two parts low-key drum backings, a drizzle of guitar intonations, and a generous dollop of ever-so-refined synth grooves, and flambé! In their case, the... more ›

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: Visitors

Local Music is Sexy Band Profile: Visitors

Excuse our brief but unforgivable hiatus from telling you all about the awesome bands playing at Austinist and Trojan Condom's Local Music is Sexy party - happening this Saturday night at the Velvet Spade - we've been hankering down in our subterranean bunker, devouring Bret Easton Ellis' Lunar Park (which we'll both rant and rave about next week) and doing whatever we can to stave off these newfound feelings of paranoia. But that's all... more ›

Austinist CD Review: Capital Flight by The Interest Kills

Austinist CD Review: Capital Flight by The Interest Kills

Austin-based rock band The Interest Kills' second album, Capital Flight, brashly defies categorization: while maintaining a strong pop sensibility, they explore everything from dance rock to post-punk. What unites the album, however, is an underlying message in the lyrics; the songs are infused with lucid sociopolitical commentary, often with a tone of vexation that stems from knowing full well just how absurdly unfair our modern world can be. more ›
