Lauren Conrad packed the second floor of BookPeople on the 19th promoting the latest book in her L.A. Candy series, The Fame Game (all, sadly, completely non-chewable). This is her fourth novel to follow the backbiting world of actresses on a reality television series called "L.A. Candy." Though she is at pains to divorce herself from her roots as one of the manufactured stars from MTV’s reality-telenovela, "The Hills," it’s clear that the novels simply trail off the set to the page. It’s fiction as transcription.

Indieroke Reminder! Tonight @ The Mohawk!
Our Indieroke night returns this Tuesday to The Mohawk. What started out as a one-off fling with rock stardom has turned into a monthly gathering of like-minded folks craving that fleeting moment of exhilaration. If you haven’t made it to one yet, we strongly recommend getting there in a timely fashion to get your name and song on the list early…and often. (You know who you are!) We will have multiple song list books going forward to ease that pain.

Austinist at the Kerrville Folk Festival
This Memorial Day holiday, we dusted off the Austinist company van for our annual trip down to the Kerrville Folk Festival for a beer-drenched, music-filled, puddle-hopping four-day weekend just two hours outside of Austin. Situated within the meadows and hills of the Quiet Valley Ranch, the folk festival—which started in 1972 as a gathering of a few friends/musicians who decided to camp out and play music for a few days—is now well into its...
Austinist CD Review: Damien Rice's 9
I'm troubled, I'm dissatisfied. I'm Irish! - Marianne Moore Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice has carried quite a weight the past four years. Ever since his debut release, O, in 2002, critics and fans have wondered how the tortured troubadour would follow up one of the most highly-regarded albums of the past five years. “For me, it was like a challenge to make something that I felt was better than the first record,” Rice recently told...
Truesday: In-Box Thinking Owns You
You need to slap something together that’s just good enough to get you through a stranger’s threshold without them noticing that you brought no booze and obviously know no one else on the premises. But there’s no need to slave over this shit. Be clever. Be creative. Crank up your lazy side. Turn down your overly-analytic side. And put together something easy and stupid.
Ray Davies ACL Taping Ticket Giveaway
Ray Davies Returns to Waterloo. As in (the old city name for) Austin, not the record store, although said store does come into play in this little post. All this word play can be quite confusing, we know.
SXSW Can't Stop This Week's New Movie Releases!
Yeah, yeah, SXSW Film kicks off this weekend, so you’re all like, “Say whaa? There are regular movies in theatres? How plebeian!” But for those of you who would rather forgo the madness of that festival, here’s what Hollywood has in store: Failure to Launch The words “to Launch” in this title seem superfluous. Much like Sarah Jessica Parker’s career without Sex and the City. The Hills Have Eyes Have you SEEN the creepy...
