Austin's Haunting Oboe Music have been playing together for about two years, and until recently, they had only had one EP to show for it. For 2008, they've made a resolution to put an end to that kind of thing: the band is going to release an EP each month this year.

On Wednesday at the Salvage Vanguard theatre, a character named Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele stripped down to his bathing suit, donned a hat and colorful lei, and then stood on his amp to proclaim, via song, “I heard noise-pop is in.” You know Ethan, you might be right. And leading the fray are none other than our own Peel, a magnanimously kick-ass band whose bits of unbridled feedback and synthesizer explosions are balanced with a collective appreciation for the types of melodies that make ears smile. With some out-of-town friends, Peel will play The Mohawk this Sunday as a fitting end to a great week of music.

Photo of Girl Talk by Davis AyersGregg Gillis didn't have a chance to stop by and say hello during Fun Fun Fun Fest, but he was kind enough to get in touch yesterday and share his thoughts on the weekend in general. As expected, he was happy with his crowd, the stage and his set, despite his previous experiences at festivals. Before his set, the eager crowd was already teeming with nervous excitement, perhaps recalling...

Shout Out Louds Our Ill Wills (Merge) 2005's Howl Howl, Gaff Gaff produced a moderate buzz for the Stockholm-based Shout Out Louds, dropping a snappier, poppier version of garage rock on our tightly belted laps. The record, equal parts Johnny Marr and Rivers Cuomo, pondered the woes of hipster heartbreak, dumb-luck sadness and singer Adam Olenius' distinctive croon simply oozed with longing and hope. That being said, Howl Howl is not at all a...

It's not often that an indie blues-rock combo from Northwest England go from garage band to a Mercury Music Prize, but that's exactly what happened to Gomez nearly a decade ago. Formed for fun in late 1996, the band's demos ignited a bidding war in the post-Britpop era and produced a classic debut album, Bring It On (hear two singles by clicking on the YouTube links below.) Since then, the band has produced four...

Those of you who breathe and/or can't stand the thought of deformed, three-eyed amphibians taking over Texas may want to read several recently published New York Times articles on TXU, the corporation that had planned to build 11 coal plants throughout the state. Interested in a buyout, investors Texas Pacific and Kohlberg Kravis just completed several weeks of negotiations with the corporation that brought prominent environmental groups like Environmental Defense and NRDC into the...

This weekend, you can ogle mass-produced spare modernism at IKEA, or head to East Austin Studio Tour (E.A.S.T.), enter a quasi-Malkovichian portal, and swim for hours in homespun creative juju. A choice so easy it might be called cake. Now, while E.A.S.T. does stop short of offering the mindblowing total body-exchange experience for which we all yearn, don't fault it too much -- it edges close. The tour provides intimate access (yup, that's rock...

After a little over a year in town, Austin's hardest-working improv troupe has not only been voted a Best of Austin 2006 pick, but also achieved a feat virtually unheard of in such a short period: opening their own theatre space. After the success of this summer's Test Pattern—a week-long series to test potential programming at the new theatre—Coldtowne will officially kick-off full operation of the Coldtowne Theatre this Saturday, October 28th. The 30-seat, black...

KXAN reported today on the openly gay Austinite who tried to enlist in the military earlier this week and was promptly shot down by recruiters at the U.S. Army Recruiting Office. And while the situation is newsworthy in and of itself, if not something of an ideological quagmire, it's the responses to KXAN's online poll -- "Should an openly gay person be allowed to serve in the U.S. military?" -- that have us fascinated.

Democratic goobernatorial candidate Chris Bell is demanding that Carole Keeton Cougar Rylander Strayhorn return $29,500 she received from members of the Zachry Family, which owns Zachry Construction Corp. Zachry Construction is involved in a partnership to develop the first phase of the Trans-Texas Corridor, which includes 4,000-plus miles of tollways. What bothers Bell is that this is the same project that Strayhorn has spoken out against publicly. In other Grandma Cougar news: Kinky wants...

The Theater Fire struggles with the challenge they've faced themselves with: playing slow, droning folk-rock without being boring and forgettable. When you're writing music in the same rough genre as Palace, Kozelek, and Iron & Wine, you need to be memorable. Unfortunately for Theater Fire, they succeed as musicians and fail as songwriters: the songs are well-executed and crisp, but they shuffle standing still, and leave you feeling confused and bored.
