It's a testament of sorts to the enduring popularity of old-school street punk that the spectacle of GWAR barreling across the Fun Fest grounds in a golf cart (piloted by Transmission's James Moody, no less) did not detract from the opening of The Casualties' set. The New York die-hards represent one of the marquee acts of the most defiant and colorful strain of punk to survive into the new millennium - members vocalist Jorge Herrera and guitarist Jake Kolatis sported neon spiked hair and a foot-high mohawk, respectively, resembling something some bizarre new breed of new wave dinosaurs outfitted in studded vests and spandex-tight jeans.

It’s refreshing and a bit of a comfort when you discover that one of the bands whose music helped drive you in those early, formative, and somewhat rowdy years - a band that you’ve all but forgotten about - is still touring, still recording and still living the life you abandoned for that nine-to-fiver. The Casualties sport dyed Mohawks and play the same street punk they did in the early '90s, when they registered on the radar of every passionate and disaffected youngster with an Exploited t-shirt and a head full of defiant ideas.
