The Carrots, Shapes Have Fangs, Curtis James & Grape Street [Show Preview]

The Carrots, Shapes Have Fangs, Curtis James & Grape Street [Show Preview]

Everyone pile into the hot tub time machine and dial it back to the time when Phil Spector was behind the mixing board and not behind bars. Antone's is hosting this all killer no filler bill of Austin's finest on Saturday night.

Well, no need to drink a bunch of off-brand energy drinks with some Skol vodka, The Carrots music will do just fine. Channeling Spector's own Ronettes and Motown's The Supremes, The Carrots mix a little old school gumption with some new school "indie" rock sincerity. more ›

For Serious Good Times: Shonen Knife at Red 7

For Serious Good Times: Shonen Knife at Red 7

For the newbies to the Shonen Knife world out there, here's a little background to the legends: three women from Osaka have been playing clean, energetic, pop-punk about things like jelly beans and barbecues since 1981. Yeah, 1981. And they're still good. And they still like their job. And they, somehow, look more like they may have been born in 1981, rather than that being the time they started playing music together. And, in a couple nice bits of trivia, they opened for Nirvana on a UK tour back in '91, and had one of their songs on Beavis and Butthead. And when they played Fun Fest a while back, it was super-awesome-time, and at a joint like Red 7, one can only imagine what fun will be had. more ›

SuperLiteBike Album Release at the Parish [Tonight]

When it comes to efficient transportation, biking champions the alternatives. The bike allows the rider to experience travel more organically than when trapped inside a stuffy four-wheeled vehicle. And undoubtedly, biking leaves plain-old walking in the dust. Some might even say biking is the perfect human speed. SuperLiteBike has a similarly good thing going when it comes to music, providing the listener an intuitive sample of indie, rock and experimental genres all at once with refreshing simplicity. more ›

Le Diamant Brut: Pete And The Pirates & The Carrots

What’s the Deal: Not too sure where these guys have been, and why they’ve evaded our radar until now, but one thing’s for sure, now that they’re on, we’re not pulling them off until we’ve had our fill, which could be a while. They’re a pop rock fivesome from Reading, England who just recently brought their catchy, jangled, kinetic sound to bear on the US with recent performances at SXSW and CMJ. Even though the sounds and moods of their 2008 debut, Little Death, can dart around a little - between lightly indie sounds and affecting rock and roll - they’re talented enough to string it all together and keep it cohesive. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Single Frame at The Mohawk

Single Frame has been creating eclectic electro-pop for a good number of years now. Black Before Red CD Release Party: Carrots, Car Stereo (Wars), It's Super, Alright?

Austin's Black Before Red have grabbed the reins of a wagon we've been glad to see getting its spokes dirty lately, a wagon loaded with swelling harmonies, subtly layered multi-instrumentation and compositions reminiscent of some of the greatest songs in America's catalog. Listening to their new album, Belgrave to Kings Circle, is like listening to glistening 70's California pop classics and Sea & Cake's Nassau simultaneously.
