Around 2007 or thereabouts you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting a member of a six-piece Montreal band fronted by a husband and wife team. That was the year The Besnard Lakes release their second album The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse on Jagjaguwar, and while it fit within the bounds of big, melancholy rock from our Neighbors to the North, The Besnard Lakes crafted orchestral-rich and haunting songs with just enough sweet harmonies and bold noise to separate them from the pack.
The Besnard Lakes, Leatherbag CD Release at the Mohawk
Preview: The Black Heart Procession at the Mohawk [Tonight]
It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from them, but San Diego’s Black Heart Procession is back with a new album Six —their first numerically titled album since their 2000 effort Three—and a tour that brings them through town with a show at the Mohawk tonight. It’s an interesting time for the band, as singer/guitarist Pall Jenkins and keyboardist Tobias Nathaniel recently reformed their indie rock combo Three Mile Pilot, who recently finished recording their first new album in over a decade and are operating concurrent to BHP for the first time.
Show Previews: White Rabbits at Emo's, YouTube You Call It This Sunday
White Rabbits will be performing on the inside stage with The Subjects and The Boxing Lesson. Also a New York band, The Subjects say they're "like Nickelback but less ballsy," but in reality the music is closer to the quirky rock of their Brooklyn ilk. Hardworking locals The Boxing Lesson (who cover "White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane...coincidence?) will also perform.
Austinist Show Preview: The Frontier Brothers @ Emo's Lounge tonight!
101X presents the latest installment of its Homegrown Live series this Wednesday at Emo’s Lounge. The Frontier Brothers will release their debut full-length Space Punk Starlet in October and some of that new material is sure to be previewed live in concert this evening. Ashley Pryble on French horn, Iram Reyes on trumpet, and Curtis Rouch on bass will join the usual band members Brett Moses, Marshall Galactic, and Travis Newman on stage for this special performance, and in their own words -- “we are going to sound B I G.” (Per The Frontier Brothers’ blog.) The jovial, space leotard wearing trio was featured in the June issue of SPIN magazine and they also caught the attention of MTV during SXSW this year.
Austinist Show Giveaway: A Place To Bury Strangers @ Emo's on Sunday!
The last time we witnessed Brooklyn band A Place To Bury Strangers live in concert, they were one of the highlights on the inside stage at our Gonna Gonna Get Down day party this year during SXSW. The trio’s vociferous sets are chock-full of wall to wall guitar heavy soundscapes, complete with the requisite reverb, dizzying distortion, and tormenting textures. We’re still surprised that the walls of The Mohawk withstood their raucous assault that afternoon.
Austinist Show Preview: The Boxing Lesson, Experimental Aircraft, The Story Of, and My Education
It's always great catching a band at their CD Release show, because you know they're going to be fired up and ready to bring it. And such is the state of this Thursday at The Parish Room, where Austin-proud The Boxing Lesson will be dropping their new disc, Wild Streaks & Windy Days, an unabashedly Pink Floyd-esque collection of psychedelic rock. With songs like "Muerta" and "Back from the Dead," they establish an eerily sinister tone that's ably coupled with songs nodding to their forebears, such as "Dark Side of the Moog."
Austinist Show Preview & Giveaway: Future Clouds and Radar at The Parish
Robert Harrison’s forte has always been melodious pop music and his current outfit Future Clouds and Radar is no anomaly. The act’s stellar self-titled album (out now on Star Apple Kingdom) contains boundless hooks and plenty of Beatles-esque psychedelia, and has garnered rave reviews from a plethora of publications such as HARP, Paste, Pop Culture Press, and No Depression. Check out the video for “Dr. No.” here.
Austinist Show Preview + Giveaway: Horse + Donkey + much, much more at Emo's Lounge
Some of Austin’s most active live acts take the stage at Emo’s on Thursday evening to bring an end to the venue’s Free Week. Horse + Donkey are riding high following the release of their impressive self-titled full-length. The album finally gives us locals a chance to enjoy the act’s reverb-heavy droning psychedelia at our pleasure, at home or in the car. Still, that’s no excuse to stop playing live, and the trio has been averaging a solid amount of gigs in town over the last few months. The explosive, vivid video for Horse + Donkey’s “Magic Horse” was directed by Wiley Wiggins and can be viewed here.
Austinist Show Preview: AM Syndicate, Peel, The Boxing Lesson at The Parish
Navdo is a record label that also promotes and books artists, and this Thursday they’re hosting their first “Hangin’ with Navdo” in Austin at The Parish, featuring Peel, The Boxing Lesson, and AM Syndicate.
AM Syndicate will be celebrating the release of their second album, Liberation, recorded by Erik Wofford at Cacophony Records. This will be the first release put out by fledgling label Novastar Records.

Austinist Preview: Emo's 15th Anniversary Bash, Day One
Emo's is more than a venue. It's an institution. Here in Austin, it's the club with cojones, the one that will open its doors to damn near anybody that can haul an amp out of their van. From screaming teenage scuzz-punkers out of Des Moines to be-pastied burlesque beauties to big name national acts; on most any given evening, there is something compelling going on at Emo's. And, oh the memories! We've been rocked...
Preview: Tussle, Yacht, Best Fwends tonight at Emo's
There's really no way to talk about just one of the bands that's playing tonight at Emo's. Though not widely praised in Austin's rock-loving community, we think they're wonderful, each with its own fanciful and individual personality. Come early. Be loud. Stay late. Avoid the bathroom. Headlining the show are locals The Boxing Lesson, whose lo-fi and indie sounds "deserve more of a following" says The Chron. Also, you'll get another chance to see Tussle,...
