Music: Our Top 15 Albums of 2010

By the time Beach House’s second album, Devotion, had assumed its lofty perch in 2008’s best-of lists, the Baltimore duo already seemed like an indie-rock mainstay. In combining a drum machine, Alex Scally’s chiming guitar, and Victoria Legrand’s gauzy keys and dusky, nuanced voice, Beach House had created alluring, mellifluous dream pop, and had seemingly mastered it within the space of three years and two albums. In doing so, they achieved a considerable cult following and critical acclaim, but not even the most die hard fan could have predicted an album like Teen Dream. With this record - their first on Sub Pop, after two on Carpark Records - Beach House pushed up against, and finally past, their limits; the shadowy dirges are still there, but the overall sound is more dynamic, the fidelity of the tracks higher, and the intensity of the band’s slow-burning, obsessive sound magnified. more ›

The Black Keys Shred at ACL Studios [Review]

The Morning After: Keep It Hid by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys)

The Morning After: Keep It Hid by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys)

After leading off somewhat inauspiciously, the album kicks into gear with the continuously enjoyable “I Want Some More,” a clattering, fuzzy, Doors-y joyride that plays best played loud, and it’s only then that it becomes clear that something more than a toss-off solo album is at hand. And really, it’s as if someone has blown new life into Auerbach, as the freedom to explore beyond the confines of the two-piece liberates him to return to what made him a talent in the first place: rugged vocals, entrancing guitar work, and an ability to write a memorable tune. more ›

New Release Tuesday: R.E.M. &

R.E.M.'s fourteenth studio album in twenty-eight years, the first studio effort since the loss of former drummer Bill Berry, and the first since their induction into the oft-considered meaningless Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame is like a time capsule thrown back from the future. The Athens-bred folk rock heroes have become a stadium rock band over the years, and at long last, they've stopped writing songs like one. more ›

Music Preview: TV On The Radio @ La Zona Rosa

Since unleashing the Peter Gabriel-like "Staring At The Sun" in 2003, TV On The Radio has done just about everything an indie band can hope for. They've released two lauded albums, made the major label jump, opened for the Pixies, recorded with David Bowie, and won the Shortlist Prize. And while The Arcade Fire may be the most blogged about band of the last two years, one could argue that TVOTR may be the... more ›

Preview: The Black Keys and Dr. Dog @ La Zona Rosa

Ohio's The Black Keys have been practicing their minimalist-blues ethos for over five years now, and have carved their own niche in indie rock. The band combines the two-man band approach of The White Stripes, riffage worthy of Jimmy Page, and blues stomps patterned after Howlin' Wolf and vintage Chess artists. The trick here is that it comes off in a way that somehow appeals to fans of both Pavement and Stevie Ray Vaughan,... more ›

In One Ear

In One Ear

With ACL just a little over a week away, we've found ourselves spending quite a bit of time at work thinking about all the bands we can't wait to see during the day, and deciding which after-parties to attend.Second to the hot weather, the task of figuring out which acts to see - and, sometimes, which acts to avoid at all cost - is our biggest concern. Certainly, we've had our hearts set on... more ›

Early Notice: (some) ACL Night Shows Announced

Early Notice: (some) ACL Night Shows Announced

One of the great things about the Austin City Limits Festival is that since so many folks are in town for the weekend, bands decide to book extra night shows. Therefore, you spend all day at the Festival then trudge out into the night and listen to music until 2AM. Then you wake up and do it all over again. (Always remembering to stay hydrated, of course. In the words of one of our... more ›
