Last Week in -IST

Last Week in -IST

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King, and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and... more ›

ACL Fest Day Two Wrap-Up

ACL Fest Day Two Wrap-Up

Andrew Bird (5:30pm): After this set, one Austinist staffer remarked: "This guy just beamed in from planet music." And with a stage full of spinning gramophones, violins, finger cymbals, and glockenspiels, it was hard to dispute that quip. Bird took the stage slightly late due to a tardy finish by Blue October, which had the crowd snarling over their shoulders at the lengthy drum and guitar codas coming off the main stage. But when... more ›

ACL Fest Updates: Hefty Aftershow Schedule Announced, And So Much More

Let's get to it: ACL Fest organizers dropped the aftershow schedule yesterday, and it's fairly extensive. Stubb's, La Zona Rosa, The Parish, and Antone's will all host aftershows over the Thursday to Sunday that everyone is in town for the big event. Highlights include an intimate show from The White Stripes and Cold War Kids at Stubb's, an extra gig from Argentina's loungerific Gotan Project (also at Stubb's), appearances by Spoon, Common, and Queens... more ›

Austinist Show Preview: St. Vincent and Scout Niblett at The Parish

As Austin emerges from the thorough soaking we've received over the past few weeks, it becomes time to dry off in the warm breeze of some talented female singer-songwriters. Saturday night at The Parish, you can do just that. St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) headlines, supporting her first proper LP Marry Me, an album that will mercilessly wallop your preexisting notions of not just female artists, but any artist writing compelling music out there.... more ›

ACL Fest Updates: Schedule Grid Release (Conflicts Galore), 3-Day Passes Sold Out, and Single-Day Tickets On Sale

This morning marks the release of the ACL 2007 schedule grid. This is probably the most stressful day of the year for the avid ACL festivalgoer, as hopes of seeing every act one likes are dashed when seeing how many of your favorite bands are playing at the exact same time. It's impossible to program such a big festival without a couple of conflicts, but three stand out to us this year as particularly... more ›

Music Preview: TV On The Radio @ La Zona Rosa

Since unleashing the Peter Gabriel-like "Staring At The Sun" in 2003, TV On The Radio has done just about everything an indie band can hope for. They've released two lauded albums, made the major label jump, opened for the Pixies, recorded with David Bowie, and won the Shortlist Prize. And while The Arcade Fire may be the most blogged about band of the last two years, one could argue that TVOTR may be the... more ›

Austinist Interviews SXSW: The Rosebuds

Austinist Interviews SXSW: The Rosebuds

The Rosebuds may be your best hour of SXSW 2007. The North Carolina-based duo has been on the Merge (Spoon, The Arcade Fire) roster for several years, and new album Night Of The Furies may just be the record that breaks them to the larger audience they deserve. The album is a notable departure from both the New Pornographers power pop of debut The Rosebuds Make Out and the more somber, Pitchfork-lauded Birds Make... more ›

Feature CD Review: Annuals Be He Me

Feature CD Review: Annuals Be He Me

Ever sniff the inside of Weezer's Pinkerton? Wait, hear us out. Its monochromatic liner notes were printed on a kind of matte, somewhat grainy paper, and happened to possess a pungent, fantastic smell. Don't look at us like you've never sniffed a record before. It's the music fan's equivalent of picking out a wedgie: inevitable, personal, and done when others aren't looking. Upon cracking open the Ace Fu Annuals debut offering, Be He Me,... more ›

Local Music Is Sexy 2 Preview: Brothers and Sisters, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Support Local Music

You’ve probably heard it through the grapevine that Brothers and Sisters is making quite an impression here in A-town. It seems that everywhere we turn, their name pops up in reference to a buzz they’ve produced in our local scene, so strong it threatens to drown out all indie-rock competition in a five hundred mile radius. We say kudos. With an influx of great bands like them, our scene’s standards have been raised ever... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: The Islands @ Emo's

Formed by two former members of brilliant-but-short lived indie popsters The Unicorns a little over a year ago, Canada's Islands just recently released their debut LP, Return to the Sea, with a haunting cover taken from a mid-1820s painting by German romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Back at SXSW, our friends over at See You In the Pit previewed this seven-piece, describing their songs as "strangely beautiful, quirky pop melodies combined with sprawling instrumentation,... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: Irving, Voxtrot @ Emo's This Saturday!

Silver Lake's Irving first gained recognition back in 2002 with Good Morning Beautiful, a solid debut notable for its artfully crafted blend of psych-pop and electronic eclecticism. In the four years since then, they've made quite a name for themselves, having released a follow-up EP, I Hope You're Feeling Better Now, and earlier this month their second full-length, Death In The Garden, Blood On The Flowers. Do a quick google search and you'll find most critics and music bloggers mentioning that, A) they've also opened for the likes of The Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand, and the Polyphonic Spree, and B) all five members of the band (Aaron Burrows, Alex Church, Brent Turner, Brian Canning, Steven Scott) are songwriters, both being nifty bits of cocktail party information as well as telltale indications of the band's deft musicianship. SPIN's Alyssa Rashbaum describes Death In The Garden as "filled with lush harmonies, summery pop, and a keyboard that was mined for every possible sound it could make." more ›

Austinist Artist Profile: Sound Team @ Emo's, This Saturday

Austinist Artist Profile: Sound Team @ Emo's, This Saturday

Austin's own Sound Team was one of the best acts we caught at ACL this year - despite the blistering temperature and sporadic dust tornadoes, they played an unceasingly energetic set that made us (nearly) forget about our impending heat strokes. Live, theirs is synth-happy dancerock constructed from the supple layering of their dual keyboard/guitars, toe-tappingly catchy drum beats, and Matt O.'s big, blaring vocals. Their studio work is something you'll have to experience... more ›

Tonight @ Emo's: Architecture in Helsinki

Tonight @ Emo's: Architecture in Helsinki

It was while trekking around Australia earlier this year that we first heard mention of a rambunctious band from Melbourne called Architecture in Helsinki. We all but forgot about this after returning to the states, and it was only one day while browsing the new releases at Waterloo Records that we happened upon AIH's second LP, In Case We Die. Needless to say, we love these guys. more ›
