Crave's vegan and vegetarian-friendly menu features a large variety of Japanese cuisine (sushi, tempura, miso soup), Thai favorites (pad thai, curries), and pan-Asian stir-fries at reasonable prices.
Austin (Veggie) Bites: Crave
2nd Annual Asia Food Fest This Weekend
Not to gush, but Satay Restaurant owner Dr. Foo Swasdee is simply the kind of person from whom our politicians and business leaders could learn a thing or twelve - especially in the selfless and admirable departments. After the 2004 tsunami, she returned to her native Thailand to assist in disaster relief efforts, and after returning to Austin continues to throw her muscle behind Thai Tsunami Orphanage. The Texas Asian Chamber of Commerce and Texas...
A Bargain Boozer's Guide to Noodles
Ah, back to school – that magical time of year when students across town come back from those lazy days of summer and start emptying their wallets on books, parking tickets, and cover charges. So what's the best way to actually break the monotony of ramen and grilled cheese without going broke in the process? Four magic letters: BYOB. Thai Noodle House is nestled in at 2602 Guadalupe, just behind the 7-Eleven on the north...
Taking Stock: Austinist's Guide To The Soup Peddler
After moving to Austin from New York last year, it was easy to feel disappointment in the limited food delivery options available. The restaurant delivery services aren't always prompt and charge steep delivery fees, many of the good ethnic food restaurants are dine-in or take-out only, and the best of the pizza places only deliver within a mile or two of their locations. Which brings us to The Soup Peddler, a unique concept in...

AFS Essentials Presents Ong-Bak
Tonight, as part of their South By Southeast: The Films of Thailand and Vietnam series, the Austin Film Society presents Ong-Bak, the breakout 2003 action film that brought martial arts whiz Tony Jaa to international attention. When a nasty big-city gangster steals a sacred Buddha head from a small Thai village (thereby severely messing up the village’s karma, or something), Ting (Jaa) ventures to Bangkok to recover it. With the help of his estranged con-artist...
AFS Essentials Presents Last Life In The Universe
Tonight, as part of their South By Southeast: The Films of Thailand and Vietnam series, the Austin Film Society presents Last Life in the Universe, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang’s gorgeously pensive tale of violence, loneliness and love on the outskirts of Bangkok. Last Life tells the story of Kenji, a timid, obsessive-compulsive librarian whose attempt to hang himself is interrupted by his brother Yukio, a Japanese gang member on the run from a vindictive Yakuza boss. After...
Cultural Learnings of Blogosphere for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Ist-a-verse
Jagshemash! Borat is a hit. It's getting rave reviews, grossing millions, and definitely the most quotable thing we've seen in ages. But Borat seems to have missed most of the -ist cities, and we were all wondering how the film would have been different if he'd made his way around the world on the -ist tour. In Shanghai, Borat would be observing Inane Learnings of Penis Photos for Make Benefit Glorious Flat World of...
Truesday: Adios Mofos
Anyone else notice the political campaign ads in our right-hand sidebar? (Even Pinkdome is running the same punchy little number, cuz blog runnaz gots tah get PAID, know whut I’m sayin’ mang!). It’s a cute little message from everyone’s good friend “Granny”. Or whatever other discomfortingly familial name she wants total and complete strangers to call her.
Except for the convicts, probably. They aren’t allowed into poll booths, so fuck ‘em.
Austinist celebrates culinary diversity with Satay Restaurant, Twin Liquors, Charlie's Austin
We don’t know what you’re doing Saturday afternoon but we’re going to a birthday party for the Queen of Thailand and you’re totally invited. Chef and all-around culinary superstar, Dr. Foo Swasdee, is celebrating both the queen's birthday and the grand opening of her new outdoor garden and patio at Satay Restaurant featuring Thai classical dance, Thai music, complimentary Thai tapas and a cash bar. Now stop sitting around this house complaining about not...
Eat, Drink and be Merry, for Tomorrow, you may Fry.
Dan, the friendly GM at Wheatsville Food Co-op is all about the delicious cooling beverages this week. His current favorite? "Organic Black Iced Tea ... I drink two cups a day and enjoy every minute of it. It tastes like tea should without any pretentious 'fusion' flavors in it to mess it up!" Also on his list? Organic Jasmine green tea, Wheatsville's iced coffee... (he says it's cold and strong - in a good...
Elsewhere in the Ist-averse
This has been a rough week for your -ist pals, though you wouldn't know it from the great posts all over the network. Plagued with server problems, our tech team (led by the great Neil Epstein) toiled around the clock to solve the glitches as they arose. Seriously, we've said, typed, and thought the phrase "server problems" more in the past week than we have for the last 35 years combined. Why not say it...
Mekong River Rat
A week or so ago we were coming out of a meeting in preparation for our fabulous slew of parties that will occur during a certain week in March. We were hungry, so having about 90 minutes to kill before going to a concert, we figured we'd be brave and eat on 6th Street - not the part of Sixth where Thai Tara and Maiko reside, the other part. In between Congress and Red...
Biting Into Thai Kitchen and Titaya's Thai Cuisine
Thai Kitchen has been a serious addiction of ours for about 6 years. It all started one New Year's Eve when we didn't really have the bucks or energy to go out, but at least wanted a yummy take out meal. Thai sounded really good. Before our move to Austin 7+ years ago we lived in Chicago, where every other block had an amazing looking culinary experience. It was hard to be poor in...
Good Onya, Boomerang's
We were excited to learn about the opening of the new restaurant Boomerang's Gourmet Veggie & Meat Pies because, doggonit, we support the eating of savory pies. Once upon a time we spent a year in Australia and we grew to love the pie as a meal. Meat pies and veggie pies are sold at street vendors in Australian cities like hot dogs in Chicago. The Australian pies are traditionaly meat and gravy, but the popularity of the pie has broadened the menu. We happened to spend our year abroad in Adelaide and often found ourselves slathering chicken and veggie pies with ketchup for a cheap and tasty lunch. That was about fourteen years ago and we haven't had a veggie pie since. Until a few days ago.
Killing James Bond: Pierce Brosnan Goes Indie In "The Matador"
When examining this week’s film options, don’t let the cast of Richard Shepard’s new film “The Matador” scare you away. With Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear in the two leads, you could be forgiven for expecting a by-the-numbers heist movie (“After The Sun 2”, anyone?). Thankfully, the first couple of minutes of the film completely dissolve any baggage James Bond brings by way of Brosnan’s character having a bad mustache, a SuperCuts do, and a taste for cheap prostitutes.
Thai Passion, Revisited
It has been years since we last ate at Thai Passion. No particular reason, except that perhaps we just don't think about it. Perhaps we live too close to Thai Kitchen and Madam Mam's. But last evening we decided to venture down to 7th Street for a little passion. Thai Passion, that is.
