Texas Tech coach (and head pirate) Mike Leach has told social networking sites Twitter and Facebook to walk the plank after some recent online postings by his players.

Each Friday, we'll be offering up a sampling of Longhorn- and Big 12-related sports coverage making its way around the Web. This week: ESPN at UT, some zealous oddsmakers, and some contradictory reporting.

Each week, we'll look at some reasons to taunt, belittle, and bully the Longhorns' football opponent. This one's almost too easy: the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

In "Where is the Bush administration now?" news, the Statesman today noted that former US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will be instructing a Political Science class this fall at Texas Tech University. The class will cover "contemporary issues in the executive branch." Who gets to broach the issue of torture? [Statesman]

Honestly, it's a bit like being ten and waiting for Christmas without quite knowing if your parents paid attention to your clear wishlist hints. While as a man he seems possibly to be lacking the courage of his convictions, his last name does sound oddly delicious. Oops. In the South, we sometimes like to begin sentences with the phrase, "Bless her heart." How can one not smile with such fashionable specs? Ooh la la! Circuit? Blown. Saturday? Check. Night? Check. Live? Mmm, not so much. Locals appear upset at mention of Tech.

Before the season began, many people felt Texas would have a loss or two by this point in the season. Instead, the 8-0 Longhorns find themselves the No. 1 team in the country after notching impressive wins over highly ranked teams. Quarterback Colt McCoy is the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy and with a win on Saturday, Texas can see a clear path to the national championship game.

Woman who had worked as pharmacist for the CVS on Riverside had fake documents. 60 soldiers who had been serving in Iraq for over a year return home to Ft. Hood for the holidays. Look what our city might be gifted: a 60-foot saxophone sculpture!

Were they a passing team that threw it all over the field? A run-first team that ground you into the dirt? A blitzing, hard-hitting defense? Over the last two games,...

#14 Texas (7-2) vs. Oklahoma State (5-3) Time: 2:30 pm, Saturday, Nov. 3 Location: Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater, Oklahoma TV: ABC Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM) With three games remaining in the regular season, the Texas Longhorns are as much as a mystery as they were before the season started. Currently ranked No. 14 in the country with games remaining against unranked teams (Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M), the Longhorns seem...

The Texas Tech vs. Texas A&M football game has been a heated rivalry in recent years. This year's game now has taken on an added fervor after a Tech student started selling a T-shirt with the likeness of Michael Vick hanging A&M's dog mascot. A take-off on the Aggies' slogan "Gig 'em", the shirts say "Vick 'Em" and show a cartoon of football player wearing Michael Vick's No. 7 jersey holding a rope with...

The University of Texas raised $26 million in athletic donations in 2006, putting it 16th among all U.S. universities. A study by The Chronicle of Higher Education found that money for athletics accounts for more than one-quarter of all contributions to some universities. The Chronicle survey reported that the country's largest athletic departments and booster clubs raised more than $1.2 billion in 2006 and 2007. The University of Texas wasn't the top athletic fund-raiser in...

If you've become increasingly bored with the Old Lions of student media at The University of Texas, you may want to consider an alternative. The Daily Texan, once considered the legit alt-paper when this was still a one-horse town, was ousted by The Austin Chronicle long ago, and now tends to offer minimal reporting that increasingly looks more like any other college daily than the proud former home of Willie Morris and Bill Moyers....

March Madness is beginning...now. Today marks the start of the Big 12 Tournament in Dallas (and other regionals as well), which means all-day basketball on TV for you student types. It sure beats working or studying. As for the top-seeded Longhorns, they secured a first round bye for the tourney, but will play Texas Tech tomorrow morning at 11:30am. If they win that one, they'll play again on Saturday in the semis at 1pm....

While Austin doesn't yet have a pro sports franchise, the last couple of years have brought us a deluge of minor league teams for our live sports fix. The newest of these is the Austin Toros of the NBDL, which is the NBA's (relatively) new minor league system. Each NBDL team serves as a source of potential talent for four NBA teams, and the Toros are currently affiliated with the Spurs, Nuggets, Rockets, and Clippers.
