From the moment the cast of Skate! zips out onto the rink at Playland Skate Center, there is an intense, joyful buzz created by a cross between the energy it generates and an ecstatic sentimentality as the audience is hurled back in time to childhood days at the rink. Anyone who has ever roller skated will, within the first five minutes of the performance, be seized with an urge to take up the hobby once again, to commit to skating every day for the rest of forever.

VIR Productions is throwing a party this Saturday at Ranch Studios . The party is an opportunity for record labels, music studios, bands and music press to meet, mingle and make business contacts. More than 15 labels should be in attendance, and there is a chance that A&E television may be on hand to shoot footage for their TV show which focuses on the Texas Roller Girls and the Austin film and music scene.

This is not a sport for the weak of heart. They shove each other hard, crashing in spectacular balls of fire into the laps of the audience. They frequently end up in fist fights and wrestling matches on the floor that have to be broken up by the only seemingly sane people in the room, the referees. And in case you were wondering, any one of these girls could take you without so much as breaking a sweat to ruin her makeup. We like that.
