But if you just have to see the 2008-09 Texas Longhorns take the court one (or two, or three ?) more time(s) this season, you’ve still got plenty of time to fly, drive, or hitchhike your way to Greensboro, North Carolina for Thursday’s matchup with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
National Signing Day didn't hold a lot of drama for the Longhorns. Most of the players who signed Wednesday gave verbal commitments months ago. Texas was in the running for a couple of late signees, but Columbus, Ga., defensive end Jarvis Jones signed with USC and Gadsden, Ala., defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick signed with Alabama.
Neither team has played in more than a month, Phoenix-area hotels are bemoaning the lack of tourism, but that doesn't mean the Texas Longhorns or the Ohio State Buckeyes are lacking in motivation heading into tonight's Fiesta Bowl.
But as conference play begins, Texas remains on a collision course with their familiar foes from across the Red River for Big 12 superiority, as Blake Griffin has led Oklahoma to a 12-1 record and No. 4 ranking, although Baylor could be poised to play spoiler as Texas and OU look to extend their run of dominance over the rest of the Big 12. In the meantime, here are a few things to watch throughout the conference season.
On Christmas Day, Jamarkus McFarland committed to play football next season for the Oklahoma Sooners, ending an intense recruiting battle between the Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.
But before the polls and the computer algorithms and the recriminations can be considered, the Longhorns (10-1 Overall / 6-1 Big 12) have a game to play (and win). Texas is heavily favored in a Thanksgiving night matchup with Texas A&M (7 pm, ESPN), but as Aggie fans are quick to point out, their team has beaten the Longhorns two years in a row.
"This is first and foremost about keeping Will at Texas," Brown said. "He's had several opportunities to interview for head coaching jobs, but we wanted him to stay here. I'm going to continue coaching as I'm enjoying it.”
But a slip-up and loss in either of their last two regular-season games would cause all those dreams to come crashing down, so the third-ranked Longhorns must stay focused on the next task at hand: facing the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. (11:30 am, FSN).
But in the absence of a superstar, this year’s squad will have to embrace a team mentality, relying on chemistry and effort in order to match and exceed the program’s success in recent years. While perhaps not the most marketable squad that coach Rick Barnes has ever fielded, this could be deepest of his tenure at Texas, and can boast several strengths to compensate for the loss of D.J. Augustin.
All week coaches have emphasized the importance of leaving last week’s game in the past, and cautioned against letting one loss sink the rest of the season. "Baylor is improving, so we have a lot of work to do and we can't let one loss beat us twice", Mack Brown said this week.
Before the season began, many people felt Texas would have a loss or two by this point in the season. Instead, the 8-0 Longhorns find themselves the No. 1 team in the country after notching impressive wins over highly ranked teams. Quarterback Colt McCoy is the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy and with a win on Saturday, Texas can see a clear path to the national championship game.
That’ll happen when you beat the No. 1 and No. 11 ranked teams in consecutive weeks and rack up over a thousand yards of offense in the process.
With that No. 1 ranking comes the requisite attention: Quarterback Colt McCoy was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, the ESPN College Game Day crew will be in town this weekend, and Coach Mack Brown is fielding calls from Bill Cosby.

Beleaguered former Texas running back Cedric Benson signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, just days after two Travis County grand juries declined to indict him on alcohol-related charges stemming from a pair of arrests earlier this summer. The Chicago Bears released Benson after his arrests, but he had not been offered work until the Bengals lost DeDe Dorsey to injury on Sunday. Benson will back up starter Chris Perry on Sunday when Cincinnati travels to Dallas to face the Cowboys.
As Ike neared landfall, officials elected to postpone the Texas-Arkansas game, giving the Longhorns an unanticipated week off. Rice, whose campus sits in the middle of storm-ravaged Houston, played on the road last week and was delayed in returning home. Many in Houston are still waiting for power and water.
The game will be played on Saturday, Sept. 27, a date that both schools had open on their schedules. No time has been announced yet.

unattributed press photoSo there’s this band. They’re called Battles, and they’re getting pretty damn big pretty damn fast. The reason for this burgeoning bigness is at least three-fold: their critically-adored debut album Mirrored, the YouTube sensation known as the “Atlas” video (watch it after the jump), and, not least of all, their ferociously energetic live show. While there's no doubting that their music can be a bit challenging, and isn’t for the faint of heart,...

Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium TV: KVUE (ABC) Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM) As the Kansas State Wildcats come to town this week, the Texas Longhorns insist they don't have revenge on their minds, but it would be easy to allow them that sentiment.
