Our sister sites in NYC, San Francisco, and Chicago may have the culinary advantage of established food scene braggin' rights, but during the long weekend of April 10-13, the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival returns for its 23rd year, showcasing Central Texas' unique culinary points of distinction (with modern mixology, gourmet hangover breakfasts, and Austinist's most important gastronomic matter - the ubiquitous search for the perfect taco - at the head of the line.)

Photo by jetalone on flickrThe third Thursday of November (one week before Big American-Style Thanksgiving) marks Beaujolais Day - setting off a sort of Cannonball Run of wine, with distributors racing to get wildly celebrated bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau, the red wine made exclusively from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France, to market. We were busy drinking some middle-of-the-road Sauvignon Blanc last night or we would have totally reminded you yesterday. According...
If you're interested in cuisine as well as creating, Texas Culinary Academy is hosting its 2nd Annual Mediterranean Festival tomorrow from 10am-4pm. The event will showcase traditional foods of the Mediterranean, complete with a Mediterranean food symposium, cooking demonstrations, hands-on cooking classes for adults and children, and wine tastings. The cooking demonstrations will offer tips and tricks for Meze, Tapas, and Tagine from Noon-3pm, while the hands-on classes for adults and children (which will include...
Not to gush, but Satay Restaurant owner Dr. Foo Swasdee is simply the kind of person from whom our politicians and business leaders could learn a thing or twelve - especially in the selfless and admirable departments. After the 2004 tsunami, she returned to her native Thailand to assist in disaster relief efforts, and after returning to Austin continues to throw her muscle behind Thai Tsunami Orphanage. The Texas Asian Chamber of Commerce and Texas...
*The views expressed in Foodie Friday are those of the author and do not represent Austinist (and quite often our readership) as a whole. Ahh, the subjective nature of tastebuds.* -The Editors Growing up in Williamson County, culinary choice was abundant. If you wanted homestyle cooking, you could drive west on 620 to Pass the Bis'kits, Please, where you might be presented with a chicken fried steak and a - you guessed it -...
Pinkies up, people. With the Domain’s opening, we now have a Neiman’s, and a Louis Vuitton, and a Tiffany’s, and that’s all very fancy, we’re sure. Little known culinary fact, though – Texas Culinary Academy (which has been a Domain tenant for several years) plays host to the tres chic tradition of High Tea every six weeks, and – la dee dah - we were lucky enough to enjoy a quick bite at this...
We are crushed that one of the hottest event at the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival - tonight’s Sip and Stroll done got sold out. We are completely missing out on both champagne and chatting up the Bubbly Professor - Jane Nickles. We are also missing out on wandering down to (sometimes yay, sometimes nay) Cru Wine Bar, where we would have been force-fed white wine. We are also, alas, not heading...
With great weather, a social atmosphere, and big crowds, there were many good times to be had at last year's Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival Sunday Fair in Georgetown. Having braved the long drive, we found a huge, beautiful park filled with white tents full of salsa, BBQ, chocolate, tamales, and copious amounts of booze. This is probably one's best chance to experience the gluttony of the THCWFF at a moderate cost,...
The matchless Jane Nickles ("Miss Jane" if you're one of her students) teaches wine classes for both the armchair wine lovers, as well as budding professional culinarians at Texas Culinary Academy, and has published a neat little volume, Winespeak 101. With Valentine's Day precariously close, we asked her to throw her two cents in regarding everyone's favorite come-hither combo - chocolate and wine. Read on, you animals... Many people, myself included, just love, love,...
It's finally a little tiny bit cold outside, and to celebrate the semblance to Holiday weather, Texas Culinary Academy is hosting its 5th Annual Gingerbread House Competition & Open House this Saturday from noon to 3pm. The competition will feature entries from children to professionals. Conventional wisdom might tell us that gingerbread houses might possibly be a little square or boring, but the entrants in this contest kick it up a notch every year...

In its six years of existence, Austin Studios has become a hallmark of the creative environment of the Third Coast. Home to countless film productions, the studios offer an attractive alternative to those looking to make films outside of the chintzy glare of Hollywood.
If you're in the mood for free olive and olive oil tastings, demonstrations by local chefs, and a reason to eat rich food and drink good wines in the middle of the day, Texas Culinary Academy, Central Market and Slowfood Austin will host Austin's first Mediterranean Festival this Saturday from Noon-4pm at the Texas Culinary Academy campus.
Guess what? It's going to be 100+ degrees on Saturday. That might not be news to you, but...guess what else: You can head over to the Texas Culinary Academy from noon-3pm and chill out bigtime with ice cream, sorbets, ice wine, and more. How better to bring your core temperature down to a reasonable degree? And, other than the booze, the event is FREE. Who can say no to free ice cream? Especially when...
"Texas wines are Texas wines! They will never be California Wines or French Wines, and should not be compared to them. You don’t laugh at an apple because it’s an apple and not an orange! Texas wines have improved dramatically since I landed in Austin (from California – gasp!!) 12 years ago. I have always enjoyed the red wines of Llano Estacado in Lubbock. I also enjoy Fall Creek Granite Reserve, and the red wines of Alamosa Vineyards in Tow. For the best $8.00, “Supermarket Wine” around, try Fall Creek Chenin Blanc. You’ll be surprised!"
Austin’s culinary scene loses big with the announced departure of Cathy Cochran-Lewis. Most recently the community relations guru for the flagship Whole Foods Market as well as their North Austin store, Cochran-Lewis helped turn this one-horse food town into the developing foodie lab it is today. If any of you nerdier food geeks remember Alton Brown coming to town, or Alice Waters, or Deborah Madison, or Martin Yan, or Paul Prudhomme, or Caprial Pence...
Searching for a great way to celebrate Bastille Day? Austinist has been tipped to what will certainly be a célébration magnifique. Although not the national holiday it is in France, you can still celebrate Saturday at the Texas Culinary Academy's Bastille Day Celebration. Bastille Day celebrates the storming of the Bastille, a prison and symbol of tyranny, that signaled the beginning of the French Revolution. A holiday for some, and an excuse to party...
Because everything’s bigger in Texas, including our appetites, we’ll be showing up at the Second Annual Texas Culinary Academy BBQ Cook-off this weekend. With more than 25 teams in beef brisket, pork ribs and whole chicken categories, the suggested $10 donation for all-you-can-eat plates sounds like a total steal. The competition will showcase the work of student teams, as well as teams consisting of local grill sargeants. The judges panel will include representatives from...
It’s been almost a week since we enjoyed brunch at the home of former Central Market executive chef Roger Mollett and his partner, Greg Murphy, and we have to tell you – Chef Roger looks damn good. Two years ago we were called on to create an apron design for a fundraiser benefiting Chef Roger, who was simply not feeling too hot. Alamo Drafthouse brought the Rolling Roadshow out to the Barr Mansion for a showing of Vatel, and everyone from Texas Culinary Academy students to Grapevine Market to Marta’s Flan came out to share their products and show their support. Mayor WIll Wynn even proclaimed it Chef Roger Mollett Day in Austin, Texas. Still, as a culinary community, we were worried.
Who’s afraid of Carolyn Bream? Not us. In fact, we’d say the economy-sized Texas Culinary Academy student – with her quirky schoolgirl ringlets and bright, funky wardrobe – is one of the least intimidating food people we’ve met. So who is afraid of Carolyn Bream? The competition. Bream is $15,000 closer to paying for her culinary education after winning the 2006 Stephan Pyles Celebrity Chef Challenge Scholarship. The annual competition, which comprises culinary students...

We don't know what culinary genius came up with the idea for an Austin Chocolate Show and Competition, but we think they might need a big, wet kiss from Austinist. Not only is it an event devoted to chocolate, but it's free!
