Tegan and Sara Quin brought the DVD portion of Get Along, their career-spanning live CD/DVD set that releases today, to Austin for three sold out screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse last weekend. Trademark charisma and comedic prowess were in full force as the twins took the stage for a lengthy and hilarious Q&A that even dropped some tantalizing hints for their next album. When asked the obligatory OMG-I-love-you-what-are-you-listening-to-right-now question, Tegan was kind enough to go beyond her original answer of M83 and twist it into a tell-all of influences for the sound of their next album: Tom Petty, Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush and Ace of Base (Swedish pop - believe it, respect it).

Preview: Tegan and Sara @ Bass Concert Hall [Friday]
Austinites have enjoyed Tegan and Sara’s previous concerts at the city’s traditional, (dare we say) run-of-the-mill live music spots like Emo’s or Stubb’s. All that changes this Friday when UTPAC’s majestic Bass Concert Hall hosts the Canadian act’s latest foray into town. A slightly odd random choice of venue, it may seem, but considering the twins’ penchant for frequent, cute banter between songs, the seated auditorium could well be the perfect setting for the sisters Quin to bestow their obvious charm, not to mention irresistible melodies and forlorn tales, upon the audience.

Austinist on the Road: The Verve takes Day One's top honors @ Coachella 2008
Attending the launch events for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s SingStar (for PlayStation 3) was our primary focus this past weekend but the added bonus of a wristband to that little festival going on in Indio, California was a welcome perk we could not pass up. Our two day experience at Coachella 2008 kicked off with SebastiAn’s remix of the Justice anthem “D.A.N.C.E.” Non-stop beats invigorated an extremely hot Sahara tent as flashing lasers and lights made the 3 p.m. set seem more like a 3 a.m. one! Battles were next for us. The band’s shifting rhythms and changing tempos were well received by the swaying crowd, bottled up in the Gobi tent which was bursting at the seams. Another quality set during the afternoon was over at the Mojave tent where Black Kids furnished the festival with dance-pop accentuated by a variety of synth output. Tracks like “Hurricane Jane” and “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You” were instant hits with the crowd, some just getting to know this talented Florida outfit, others apparently already big fans.
