The Beginning of the End for Lions Municipal?

The Beginning of the End for Lions Municipal?

The long-term future of the crown jewel of Austin municipal golf -- Lions Municipal Golf Course -- is in question after UT's Brackenridge Tract Task Force recommended hiring an outside master planner and redeveloping the land occupied by the course. Lions was built in 1928 and has hosted some of history's most notable golfers. Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite have won the annual Fourth of July Firecracker Open there, and Ben Hogan's comment on... more ›

Party Safety: No Longer An Oxymoron

Party Safety: No Longer An Oxymoron

The Austin Police Department and the party-throwers living in the campus area have always seemed to get along. If you find yourself at a party around campus and a police cruiser stops out front, no one runs--even when that sweet bubbler on the table still has smoke billowing from it--everyone just walks away calmly. APD knows they can't stop every party, arrest every weed smoker and hand out tickets to every minor, so they usually give the ultimatum: "everyone leaves, or citations." However, starting today, college kids around Austin may not think Austin cops are so cool anymore. more ›

Changes to Come On Austin's Most Schizophrenic Street

In less than one month, the incoming class at The University of Texas will start walking the sidewalks of Guadalupe Street, listening to Nick Drake on their shiny iPods and buying every Bob Marley poster within a mile radius. These sidewalks, between 19th and 29th street, are affectionately known as The Drag, an area in a constant state of flux as businesses attempt tirelessly to keep up with the perpetual flakiness of an 18-24... more ›

Assessing the Power-Grab: ABA Creates Task Force to Investigate Bush

Cometh the 2006 American midterm election season. Hark! Let the melee commence! Bring on the ideological struggle! Loose, let the personal insults fly! Thus far: Plenty of false starts in the news, nothing much interesting to share. Sure, Bush came out against homosexual marriage again the other day. Blah. Typical, predictable, Christian Coalition rabble-rousing, failed President flailing in his death-throes, blah-blah nothing to see folks, move along. But the REAL opening salvo for the... more ›

Artist Catherine Chow Wanted to Come to SXSW. Badly.

We know people who drove for 24 hours from Minneapolis to make it to SXSW this year (much love, kids). We know people who flew from Bangkok and Madrid. We even have a friend who hitched from Seattle to be here. We thought that last scenario was a little extreme. The we read this. more ›

You Mess With the Alamo Drafthouse, You're Gonna Pay

You may have heard in recent weeks about a man who was running around town committing armed-robberies at restaurants. (No, we didn't tell you about it here, but Jesus, people, do we have to do everything for you?) Well, apparently this fella robbed five different restaurants in Austin, the last one being the Alamo Drafthouse Village on Anderson Lane. He terrorized Austin after having done the same thing in Louisville. Apparently, he was feelin... more ›
