SXSW Music Highlights: Motörhead & More

SXSW Music Highlights: Motörhead & More

Motörhead at Austin Music Hall (3/17): Previously reserved for the Austin Music Awards, the opening night of SXSW Music at the Austin Music Hall this year was a welcome blast from the past for metal fans. Although history does not see them in the same light as the Metallicas or the Megadeths, Voivod were veritable contributors to the thrash metal movement of the ‘80s. It was heartening to see they could still deliver the goods at a sizable venue, albeit to a meager crowd. Next up, Michael Monroe ensured the days of glam were not forgotten, performing solo material as well as classic Hanoi Rocks songs to a growing and enthusiastic audience. The tunes were anthemic and enjoyable, but it was Monroe who stole the show, prancing all over stage, twirling his mic continuously, and jumping into the photo pit to allow an eager group of fans to join in on the vocals. We were a little surprised that AMH was not jam packed when Motörhead took the stage around 10:30. Considering that the band had played the night before at Stubb’s and Lemmy: The Movie had already been in the SX news for days now (plenty of Lemmy sightings included), perhaps Motörhead had worn out their welcome in town? Not in our book! The band took no prisoners as they delved into their healthy catalog for a number of speed metal gems, reminding us why they are held in such high esteem by fans of that genre. more ›

SXSW Film Preview: The Myth of the American Sleepover

SXSW Film Preview: The Myth of the American Sleepover

One of eight films in the Narrative Features Competition, David Robert Mitchell's The Myth of the American Sleepover follows four Metro-Detroit teens trying to make the most of their last summer night. They haunt neighborhood streets, swimming pools, lakes, and abandoned factories as they scramble to find that moment worth talking about. Anything...a connection. Something to combat that endlessly looping thought that they just haven't done enough. On their quest to live before it's too late (an incredibly dramatic statement for anyone that still has a "teen" at the end of their age, btw), they find themselves immersed in the stuff of nostalgia -- those real, quiet moments we learn to appreciate a bit more as years pass. more ›

BrooklynVegan & M for Montréal’s Official SXSW Daytime Party [Galaxy Room / March 20th]

BrooklynVegan & M for Montréal’s Official SXSW Daytime Party [Galaxy Room / March 20th]

BV’s list of events is quite impressive. This throwdown at Emo’s on the 17th and this metal/pizza bash at Hoeks on the 18th will surely satisfy yearning ears and hungry stomachs alike. The cream of the crop, however, may well be BV and M for Montréal’s official day party at Galaxy Room on the 20th. The two stages at the former Radio Room are set to feature some of Montréal’s finest such as Plants and Animals, DuChESS SayS, Think About Life, Beast, and The Besnard Lakes, along with fellow Canadians Holy Fuck and Jason Collett from Toronto, and Jonquière metal legends Voivod. Local Natives, Andrew WK, Suckers, Wye Oak, and the Austin dream team that is Roky Erickson with Okkervil River ensure that some U.S. talent is on offer as well. Seattle’s KEXP 90.3 FM plans to document all the revelry at this free show and Nudie Jeans will be on hand to give away goodies to lucky fans. And as if the line-up wasn’t mouthwatering enough, the lure of free treats from local favorite Daily Juice and the ever-popular wagon that is the Ice Cream Man should make this shindig a destination of choice come Saturday morning. more ›

Interview & Preview: TV Torso @ Beerland [Thursday]

On Thursday though, the entertainment on offer at Beerland is all local -- enjoy agreeable blues-pop from The Happen-Ins, brooding post-punk from Dirty Dancing, and stirring indie-rock from TV Torso. The WOXY DJs will also be on hand, spinning choice tunes, no doubt. Matt Oliver from TV Torso was kind enough to answer some questions for us over email earlier this week, complete with a plethora of guiding Gmail emoticons, which, according to him, “pretty much say anything way better than I ever could.” more ›
