Indie Picks For The Weekend: Sound Of My Voice, Monsieur Lazhar & My Way

Indie Picks For The Weekend: Sound Of My Voice, Monsieur Lazhar & My Way

The summer blockbuster season seems to start a little earlier every year, and there's no question it's officially in full swing this weekend with The Avengers filling over 4,000 screens nationwide. If superheroes aren't your thing (or if you like us and up for catching more than one film this weekend), we'd like to steer you towards the indie drama Sound Of My Voice, which has our highest recommendation! more ›

We Drank 55 Million Dollars Worth of Booze... in a Month.

Well done everyone! We drank $55 million worth of alcohol this past March! The state is estimated to have received about $8 million in tax revenue off sales of the sauce which, if Texas lawmakers had a sense of humor, would go towards alcohol education programs. more ›

Until Next Time: Six Final Thoughts On A Triumphant SXSW

Until Next Time: Six Final Thoughts On A Triumphant SXSW

While we're admittedly late to the party, before we say a final farewell to SXSW 2012, it seemed right to mention the trends, changes, and successes that marked this year's event. 1. With the new ACL Live/Moody theater downtown, SXSW can do more and accomodate big egos and productions. In a 10-day stretch, ACL Live/Moody hosted Radiohead, Jay-Z, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in a 2,750 seat theater. If those three headliners were announced for Coachella, Bonnaroo, or ACL, people would literally flood the internet with praise. more ›

SXSW Film Reviews: Chasing Ice, The Central Park Effect, The Will

There's never enough time to see all the documentaries we want to see at SXSW, but we managed to catch several this year and were -- for the most part -- impressed by the crazy, creative work being done, both in front of and behind the camera. Read on for a few reviews, and check out the rest of our SX film coverage here. more ›

In Case You Missed It: Bruce Springsteen's Keynote at SXSW 2012

Even if you weren't able to attend SXSW in any sort of official capacity, you no doubt heard incredible things about Bruce Springsteen's keynote and his subsequent performance at ACL Live here in Austin. The keynote (warning: full of swearing, hence NSFW) was a moving talk, focused on Springsteen's own inspirations, with a nod to the magnitude and abundance of options for music lovers today. He shared an optimistic outlook on popular music's flexibility and the potential given the new landscape we experience today. Never taking himself too seriously, he inserted the ever-important consideration of how one looks posing with a guitar in the mirror still drives him today. more ›

The Only Living Girl In New York: An Interview with Eleanor Friedberger

The Only Living Girl In New York: An Interview with Eleanor Friedberger

For over a decade, Eleanor Friedberger has been making driving, arty, blues-inflected rock as the fairer half of the Fiery Furnaces. While her brother Matthew contributes most of the instrumentation and generally gets the credit as the outside-the-box songwriting savant, Eleanor's lyrics, with their camera's-eye attention to detail and coolly detached verbosity, are equally responsible for elevating the Furnaces above the fray of garage-rock bands with a literary bent. On 2009's I'm Going Away, Eleanor took a greater hand in the songwriting, penning almost all of the album's lyrics and contributing to the melodies; not coincidentally (it turns out), the album was the prettiest Fiery Furnaces record, achieving a subtler emotional impact than they'd previously reached. Her first solo record, 2011's Last Summer, further portrayed an artist capable of crafting affecting pop songs. Blending a diverse array of styles, from 70s AM Gold to light disco to folksy-pop a la Joni Mitchell, the album resonates as a songwriter's love letter to her adopted hometown of New York. We got Eleanor on the phone to talk about making the record, why she loves New York so much, and why she'll be heading to West Texas for a spell after SXSW. more ›

At SXSW, Everyone Gets Towed. Everyone.

At SXSW, Everyone Gets Towed. Everyone.

This photo from Austinist photographer Trent Lesikar could have a simple explanation (cop car broke down), or it could be emblematic of the chaos and confusion of SXSW (the tow truck driver is a rogue club owner being proactive about keeping their party going past 3). We'll hope for the latter. more ›

SXSW Rumors Swirl - Lil' Wayne? Skee-Lo?

Okay, so no one (but us) is talking about Skee-lo - why is that? - but talk has turned to Lil' Wayne playing a secret show during SXSW. As the blogs confirm/unconfirm candidates who may stop in Austin, we can take comfort in knowing that Lionel Ritchie will be here, for sure, and then we may gently amuse ourselves with this new blog, Southby Secrets. What it lacks in helpfulness it may at least make up for in lulz. more ›

A Few Official(ly Odd) SXSW Showcases

Part of the SXSW experience is seeing music in peculiar locations, from car garages to condemned chemical plants. Still, what's more strange - grooving to Best Fwends in a puddle of chlorine, or jamming to Nakia at six in the morning? These legit showcases lead us to wonder. more ›

Music + Film: SXSW 2012 Schedules Are Live

Music + Film: SXSW 2012 Schedules Are Live

It seems that SXSW gets more organized every year - nearly a month in advance, version one of the massive SXSW Super Grid showing all panels, talks, films, and band showcases is now up for your perusal. As with any conference taking place in 100 venues with 2,000 bands and hundreds of films, expect these grids to shuffle often in the next few weeks due to last-minute programming additions, changes, and deletions. One other music note: the banner showcases at Stubb's, Auditorium Shores, Austin Music Hall, and ACL Live/Moody are notoriously absent from this initial grid, so expect some show 'reveals' in the weeks to come for some of the bigger names like Fiona Apple and The Jesus and Mary Chain. more ›
