Surfer Blood's rise embodies the classic dream of all musicians - in the right time at the right place with the right contacts, all coming together in a perfect storm of success. In 2009, the band's debut single "Swim" blew up, followed by the 2010 release of Astro Coast landing on year-end best of lists across the board. These West Palm Beachers are living the high life right now, touring across the globe and making the most of it. Austinist had a chance to catch up with John Paul Pitts, lead vocalist/guitarist of Surfer Blood, in a tour van traversing from a late night practice to their hotel room before commencing a week-long stay in town for SXSW.

What’s the Deal: This West Palm Beach, Florida indie rock outfit blends the tastes of surf rock and pop with indie quirk to create a debut album that cracked the Billboard 200 chart and received a round of kudos from critic types, including Pitchfork who was really digging on their first single “Swim.” A scramble for musical reference when Astro Coast was released brought on comparisons to Weezer, Built to Spill, even Spoon.
