Those Darlins [Show Preview]

Those Darlins [Show Preview]

Don’t be fooled by their name, Those Darlins are a fierce four-piece: three rough-and-tumble ladies and one (lucky?) gent. Jessi (guitar), Kelley (bass) and Nikki (baritone ukulele), formed the group in 2006 after meeting at the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp in Tennessee, which Kelley founded. The three assumed "Darlin" as their surnames and have since been channeling outlaw stories that conjure comparisons to Wanda Jackson and The Carter Family, with a bit more edge. To fill out their production, Linwood Regensburg joins the ladies on drums. Together their jangly, whiskey-soaked waltzes chronicle straight-forward stories influenced by Appalachian country music. Songs like "Wild One," and “Snaggle Tooth Mama,” reflect their booze-fueled, hard-headed disposition. more ›

Monotonix at Mohawk [Show Preview]

If you’ve ever heard of Monotonix then you know that just about anything could happen at tomorrow night’s show. The maniacal three-piece from Tel-Aviv, Isreal have built a reputation for raucous shows that turn into chaotic parties, which have notoriously resulted in them being banned from most of the venues in Tel Aviv. Between their gnarly garage-rock and their debauched antics, these guys certainly know how to draw a crowd. more ›

Aquarium Drunkard at SXSWi: The Strange Boys, Harlem, Blair

What's not to love about a garage band that recorded an album titled Free Drugs ;-) at a guy called Coomers' mom's house? Nuthin', that's what. To make matters even better, Harlem are teaming up with fellow local lovables, Strange Boys and Brooklyn's Blair for a free show Saturday night. Harlem will soon be following up their dive-bar dissertation Free Drugs ;-) with a new album, "Hippies". You'll want to preview the track "Friendly Ghost" and put on your dancing shoes before Aquarium Drunkard's excellent showcase. Check out our interview with Harlem bassist Jose Boyer for insights on radness, dancing, deaf sound guys, and turning text messages into lyrics. more ›

Fun Fest Artist Profiles: The Strange Boys and Torche

Local heroes and In The Red-signees The Strange Boys will bring their 60s pastiche and summer fun party vibe to Fun Fun Fun Fest’s yellow stage on Sunday afternoon. While The Strange Boys do seem to fit into the lately omnipresent, and as some may argue, moribund lo-fi garage pop genre, they also manage to transcend many of their contemporaries. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: The Black Lips at Waterloo Records & Emo's

The Black Lips impressed us immensely during their various SxSW performances this year. Their fusion of garage, punk, blues, and pyschedelia packaged in an extremely energetic live show was one of the more memorable moments of the festival. The Atlanta based act returns to Austin this Friday for multiple performances yet again. The Black Lips released their fifth album (and their first studio full-length for Vice Records), Good Bad Not Evil in 2007. The... more ›

Big Night @ Emo's: Black Angels, Lemurs, Golden Bear & More

Emo's is packing in approximately half of the bands in Austin this evening for a Bacchanalian orgy of rock and roll, Lone Star, and - with all due respect - poorly conceptualized tattoos. Silly tats aside, tonight is guaranteed to be a blowout, and whether you're looking to get familiar with some of the best indie that this town has to offer, or a long-time fan, you'll be sonically satiated come this evening. Here's... more ›

Emo's Free Week w/ Zykos, Brothers & Sisters

Emo's Free Week w/ Zykos, Brothers & Sisters

The only downside of Emo's Free Week is that you have to decide which shows to attend. Some ambitious folks will move between the three venues and check out bits of several shows, but that requires, well, moving, and we're not into that. We'd rather grab five drinks from the bar, stake out a spot in front of the stage and spend all our available energy hollering "raaawwwkkk and roollllll" until we either pass out... more ›
