Every year comedians from around the area assemble to compete for the coveted title of "Funniest Person in Austin." For this month's installment in our interview series with performers from Austin's local comedy scene, we caught up with this year's winner—Bryan Gutmann. How long have you been doing stand-up? About three years now. I had been thinking about trying stand-up longer than that, but it took a while to get up the courage. What brought...

One of Austin's best-known solo performers is back in town. Through June 16th, Rob Nash performs College Freshman Year Sucks at the Vortex. His immensely successful shows feature him playing various characters inspired by his parochial, Texas upbringing. Continuing our monthly series on comedy performers, we talk to Rob about keeping characters straight, Lily Tomlin and the quality of a certain prop comedian's stash. How long have you been doing solo shows? Twenty years...

The Harry Ransom Center at UT is announcing today that they have acquired the archives of American playwright David Mamet. These archives include journals, manuscripts and drafts of each of the acclaimed writer's plays and screenplays. David Mamet, writer of such works as "Glengarry Glen Ross", The Untouchables, and Wag the Dog, will also come to UT for a series of short residencies over the next four years. In a letter to the Ransom Center...

This month, the Austinist kicks off a monthly interview series with local alt-comedy performers featuring interviews with Austin's best stand-up, spoken word, sketch, improvisation, and comedic actors. For the inaugural interview, we hooked-up with Lisa deLarios, local stand-up and frequent performer on some of Austin's best know stages. She recently returned from performing at this year's Aspen Comedy Festival, and discusses New York, being an agrarian at heart and getting her start. How long have...

Friend of Austinist and the dude responsible for last fall's wicked Ghostface Killah-Ghostland Observatory mashup (download it here), Chris Rose is half of DJ duo Car Stereo (Wars), with whom we've partnered to throw many a get-down in the past months. CS(W) is making its SXSW debut as a proper showcasing artist this year -- check 'em out at the Beauty Bar on Wednesday, March 14th, at 11pm. [mp3] Car Stereo (Wars) - SXSW Mixtape...

In case you've missed it, there's a comedy revolution brewing in New York right now. Comics like Todd Barry, Demitri Martin, and Aziz Ansari have been drawing huge audiences of hipsters and regular folk alike with satire that owes far more to the silliness and irony of Steve Martin and Eddie Izzard than to the lowbrow Comedy Central/Def Comedy Jam nonsense that's infested comedy clubs for a decade. Among the brightest lights of the...

To do this weekend: save the bank (and, consequently, family) from the bad guys, take pet monkey to the vet, mourn the state of Steve Martin’s career, have mild lesbian encounter, be appalled by people’s ignorance. Firewall A man is forced to break into the very bank his security program protects, or else suffer the loss of his much-younger wife and children at the hands of super (and super adorable!) villain Paul Bettany. In...

We’re having a hard time coming up with sufficient snark for each of the new movie releases today. Could our health be failing us? After all, too much snark is like red meat: delicious, but ultimately bad for you. Besides, some of these flicks actually look good! And whoa, check it out – we’ve even reviewed a few already! It’s like we’re doing our job, or something....

Our parents sent us Steve Martin's book Shopgirl in paperpack a few years back and we tore through it quickly, enjoying each page, but we were not exactly blown away or anything. We liked it. We found it to be a well written novella*. We found it funny and sweet and insightful and smart, though not exactly transcendent. When we learned that a movie was being made from the book we wondered how it...

Jason Schwartzman (our favorite private school dropout) and Claire Danes (our favorite former depressed teenager) are supposed to be at tonight's Austin advance screening of Steve Martin's Shopgirl. Also in attendance will be the director, Anand Tucker. We enjoyed Martin's novella, Shopgirl--a bittersweet portrait of finding one's identity in La La Land (aka Los Angeles), and so we are looking forward to the adaptation. Shopgirl shows tonight (Oct. 20th) at the Paramount at 7:50....

Soon to be Austinist contributor Sonnet Blanton writes: We know. It’s SXSW. Everyone’s rushing round trying to meet Anil Dash and see the Kaiser Chiefs, now, while they’re still that band that most people haven’t heard of, and hoping to run into Wayne Coyne, but people, next Sunday night, the Alamo Drafthouse is the place to be. The downtown location will be hosting The Muppet Movie Sing-a-Long. Austinist doesn’t need to remind you how lucky...
