"Just before they demolished Palmer Auditorium to make way for the Long Center, the architects invited a group of photographers to document the old building and I somehow managed to tag along. This is the view from roof of the stage house looking down on the multi-colored tile and downtown Austin. Nowadays I like to point up to the white ring that circles the plaza and tell my friends that I once walked on it. No one ever believes me, but it was a lot easier when there was a building there that you could hold on to." - Steve Hopson

Steve Hopson's Lens - Cottonwood #6
"I feel a little dumb in admitting this, but I'd been a swimmer and a photographer for many years before I thought of combining the two, and, when I did, it was winter. I ended up, upsidedown, in Deep Eddy Pool trying to photograph this stately Cottonwood. The tree got cut down a few months later, but its photo was included in an exhibit at Arthouse Texas." - Steve Hopson
Steve Hopson's Lens - Pollen Grain Sculpture By Chris Levack
"Chris Levack has created several great pieces of sculpture around town, including the Iron Wave at the Skate Park and the trellis in the flagship Whole Foods plaza. But my favorite is the giant Pollen Grain in the Mueller neighborhood, and I think about it every spring when my allergies get nasty." - Steve Hopson
Steve Hopson's Lens - Eeyore's Birthday Costume Contest Winner
"I'm always amazed at how much creativity and effort Austinites put into in designing costumes. Don Clinchy won this year's Eeyore's Birthday Party costume contest with this clever Hi-Phone costume, but his costumes are always over the top - one year he even came to Eeyore's as Daniel Johnston's 'Jeremiah the Innocent' (Hi How are You) mural." - Steve Hopson
Steve Hopson's Lens - Bale Creek Allen at E.A.S.T., 2010
"I'm a huge fan of Bale Creek Allen's art and visited his studio during EAST in 2010. When I asked for a portrait, Bale said that no one had ever shot him on his motorcycle, so we rolled it into the center of the room and he took this huge cross down off the wall and hung it around his neck." - Steve Hopson
Steve Hopson's Lens - KLRU's First Taping At Their New Studio
"I was thrilled to get to shoot the unveiling of the Austin City Limits background at its new location. The Steve Miller band played and I had forgotten how many great songs they wrote. A few months after the show, I was double thrilled to get a call from the Bob Bullock Museum and today the photo is part of their Texas Music Roadtrip exhibit." - Steve Hopson
Steve Hopson's Lens - "Golden Clouds"
"Summer 2005 was really hot, but we turned out to Zilker Park to see Marcia Ball at Blues on the Green. We hadn't seen a cloud in weeks and everyone turned to watch this energetic golden cloud pass overhead." - Steve Hopson
Steve Hopson's Lens - "The Fall Of Peter Pan"
Longtime Austinist photographer Steve Hopson is always out taking photos, sending us shots of everyone from the teenage heartthrobs Hot Chelle Rae to indie darling Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs during FFFest. For this new feature, we're going to look way back into Hopson's portfolio, in the tradition of and in tribute to Chicagoist's "From The Vault of Art Shay" retrospectives. The first photograph we'll share with you is of renovations at Peter Pan Mini Golf.

We're just about a month away from the opening of the newest Alamo Drafthouse location. The plans for Alamo Slaughter Lane were started almost four years ago, but had to be put on hold when the tanking economy called the entire shopping center development into question. It all ended on Monday night, without fireworks, on Independence Day...but not before the band, the club, the event and the parking lot scene became the stuff of Austin music legend.
