A gagillion cities have performance spaces named The Paramount Theatre: Oakland, Charlottesville, Seattle, hell, even Shreveport had a theatre named the Paramount at one point. But ours is the only one that is hosting its first EVER Poster Sale and Silent Auction this Saturday! Harumph! After its renovation in the mid 70’s, the Paramount began squirreling away classic movie and theatre posters—as well as signed memorabilia from performers such as BB King, Ravi Shankar, and...

Last June, a ruptured water main on Congress Avenue flooded the State Theatre, destroying the stage, production facility and a quarter of the venue's seats. For the past several months, the future of the historic 70-year-old institution was unclear. At a press conference held earlier today, Austin Theatre Alliance executive director Ken Stein announced that the State will eventually return as a working theatre venue, and perhaps even as a producing theatre. A phased reopening,...

And they're off.... The nominations for this year's B. Iden Payne Awards have been announced. We received 'em this morning, straight from the offices of the Austin Circle of Theatres. If you want to get in on the action, ballots will be available starting this Thursday, September 21, at ACoT (701 Tillery Street) & AusTIX (kiosk at the Austin Visitors Center, 209 E. 6th Street). You must be an ACoT member to vote, but...

Maybe some of you noticed the recent passing of the State Theatre. (By “passing”, we really mean “death”.) The June water main break that flooded the theatre – moving artists like Kathy Dunn Hamrick and Steven Tomlinson to other venues in town – has now, for all intents and purposes, killed the organization entirely. At the very least, the current season is all but canceled, and all State Theatre staff (except Artistic Director Michelle...

Another fine weekend of theatre and dance lay before ye. Ya’ll. Yous guys. Admit it, even though you might talk big about “shacking up with the sweet-ass honeeeeeyz”, what you’d really like to do is see someone perform – for once – without whippin’ out their nipples. Well now, captain sensitive, we’ve got the ticket for you. You can live it up with the legendary Eartha Kitt or kick it downtown style with your...

A slew. A smorgasboard. A swarm. A bunch. A lot. All right, people. After a little bit of a lull last weekend, we’re back on form here in theatre-land. Dance, drama, debate, big cheesy musical adaptations of classic MGM films – it’s all here, and it’s all waiting. For you. Always for you. That being said, big ups to our Austinist Pick of the Week, Kathy Dunn Hamrick’s And Then There Were Twelve. Every...

The historic State Theatre on Congress Avenue, which flooded two weeks ago when a water main ruptured overnight and left the backstage and front rows of seating underwater, has considerably more damage than what was initially anticipated, according to KXAN:

A water main in the downtown area ruptured last night, flooding the historic State Theatre on Congress Avenue. The stage (which includes the current Bunk Bed Brothers set, tentatively moved next door), first four rows of seating and backstage are underwater. Power and phone lines are also out. The Paramount Theatre wasn't affected.

We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind. 'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance, well they're…no friends of mine. I say, we can go where we want to – a place where they will never find. And we can act like we come from out of this world – leave the real one far behind. And we can dance. And so can Blue Lapis Light....

This week’s theatre offerings have nothing to do with John Aielli or KUT, and we won't be playing a variety of songs referencing how exceptionally cold it’s been these past few days. Really, we just liked the title. (Sorry to all you non-KUT listeners who we’ve just completely excluded.) Plus, it actually is a very eclectic week on the boards (or, er, the concrete floors...in our local warehouse theatres). There’s an exciting collaboration afoot...

This weekend is your last opportunity to see Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson's "King Hedley II" at the State Theatre. More than merely garnering every theatre-related prize under the sun - we count several Pulitzers, a Tony, and the New York Drama Critics' Circle award just at a glance - Wilson is one of America's most perceptive playwrights and, through his works, a historian of African American life. His impressive body of work, most...
