Texas Stars Host Playoff Watching Party At Cedar Park Center

The Texas Stars have packed a lot of excitement into their first season at the Cedar Park Center: they earned a spot in the American Hockey League's Western Conference Finals, then fought the Hamilton Bulldogs through to a tie through six games of the seven-game series. The deciding game will be tonight at 6:30 pm in Canada, but the Stars have planned a watching party in their home building for the team's fans. more ›

ACL Interview: Downtime With Stars

ACL Interview: Downtime With Stars

Offensive, hilarious and meaningful, the male members of Stars kept us laughing and inspired throughout our Sunday morning discussion of pedophiles and music. The group performed at ACL on Sunday afternoon and took a break with us to chat. Austinist contributing writer Candace Birkelbach spoke with Torquil Campbell, Evan Cranley and Chris Seligman. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: The Lemurs & Black Before Red @ The Mohawk tonight

The Mohawk presents a solid double bill of local pop this evening. The Lemurs have been writing new material over the last few months and a handful of those songs will be included in their set tonight. The band enjoyed a stellar 2007 -- highlights included licensing their music to NBC show Las Vegas (as well as an Australian indie flick called Newcastle) and touring with Canadian act Stars. This past Sunday, ME Television telecast a 2nd ME Live! featuring The Lemurs' shimmering melodies in concert at a recent La Zona Rosa gig. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Beerland with Basic, Faceless Werewolves and more

Once again, Beerland is delivering the goods this week with a four bands worth of impressive up and comers. For hyperactive guitar-led jams that feature whip smart drums and a keyboard backbone, look no further than Shapes Have Fangs. Also harnessing the kinetic energy of garage jams are Diagonals, whose frontman Steve Garcia also rocks in Peek-A-Boo records signees Black Lipstick. more ›

Austinist Show Giveaway: Stars & Dax Riggs at Stubb's

Montreal based outfit Stars has managed to capture our heart every time we take in their pop melodies and poignant lyricism. Amy Millan and Torquil Compbell are true stars, countering each other perfectly with crisp vocal delivery, while crystal clear production on the band’s recordings complemented by immaculate instrumentation make for a mighty fine final product. The band has two releases to be proud of this year -- Stars released In Our Bedroom After The... more ›

Art Preview: Film Projection Artist to Capture Joys of Urban Life

Last New Year’s Eve, experimental film artist Luke Savisky gave us the eye. This Halloween season, he'll create a surreal urban oasis on film at one of Austin’s historic parks. It may be hard to top images of a giant eyeball projected on to a downtown water tower, but Savisky’s latest large-scale film installation promises to be just as imaginative—and maybe just a little less creepy. On Friday night, Savisky will present Film Actions VI:... more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Moth!Fight! and Guests - A Victorian Pageant

Moth!Fight! are a band who have had a much longer gestation period than most of their peers, a time in which one can assume songwriter and “conductor” Kevin Adickes painstakingly perfecting both the rumpled antique aesthetics that dominate his band’s look, performances and sound – the latter of which calls to mind both the inspired trippy noise-pop of The Olivia Tremor Control, but which also speaks in the lexicon of the band’s clear, more current... more ›

ACL Fest Artist Interview: Patterson Hood

ACL Fest Artist Interview: Patterson Hood

Patterson Hood is best-known for his work with the Drive-By Truckers, but the Alabama native, whose father was a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, has a musical career stretching nearly 20 years. He's been through near-hits and near-misses aplenty. In one particularly tumultuous season, he put together an album of solo material, Killers and Stars, which became an unofficial release passed out at shows and circulated amongst fans. Now, as he's wrapping... more ›

Austinist Previews Austin City Limits Music Festival: Augustana, Amos Lee

Austinist Previews Austin City Limits Music Festival: Augustana, Amos Lee

Augustana. Even if you don’t know the name, chances are you’ve heard their single “Boston” over the past year. You know the one. They played it in on Laguna Beach, Scrubs and The Today Show. It hovered around the thirties on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a while. You know, it’s a melodic, piano-driven pop rock song with super sweet, almost cherubic vocals played by some baby-faced hipsters with shaggy hair and tight jeans.... more ›

California’s Novice headlines a cracking pop bill this Wednesday at Room 710. Future Warped Tour candidates, the band expertly combines catchy melodies, energetic power pop, and mall-punk production. Novice’s discography includes A Day Out In The Sun EP (2003), Interrupting The Scenery (2004), and Forgive The Silence (2006), along with this year’s self titled EP. On the road, they have played with the likes of Less Than Jake and Shiny Toy Guns. The Most,... more ›

Austinist Previews Austin City Limits: Manchester Orchestra and Patterson Hood

Straight out of the suburbs of Atlanta, the young men of Manchester Orchestra have quickly found a spot in the Georgia indie-rock circuit. Guitarist and lead vocalist Andy Hull homeschooled himself his senior year of high school to allow himself more time to focus on his work with Manchester Orchestra. The result of that focus is the band's first full-length. Peppered with references to Woody Allen, the album is full up with moody music that... more ›

AMODA Presents Brian McBride of Stars of the Lid @ Volitant Gallery

Brian McBride began Stars of the Lid here in Austin years ago, but his solo album, When the Detail Lost its Freedom, is one that gestated during a time of terrible strife (divorce, harrowing move to new city) in McBride's life. Recorded almost exclusively on an SR X keyboard sampler, Detail utilizes guitar, piano, vocals, harmonica, trumpet and strings, abandoning keyboards and synthesizers entirely. The result is a lovely, gentle and ultimately emotional album... more ›

Music Preview: Old 97's @ Stubb's Tonight

Alt.Country, power pop, loud rockabilly, and love songs. If you enjoy any or all of the things we've just mentioned, make it a priority to head to Stubb's tonight. For almost 15 years, Dallas-based The Old 97's have been playing a mixture of the music they love. The band started on Bloodshot Records as a loud, rough-hewn alt.country bar band, then slowly evolved their sound into something catchy and polished enough that the love songs from 2001's Satellite Rides would have fit in fine on a Grey's Anatomy montage. In fact, the band were recently featured in an extended scene in the Vince Vaughan film The Break-Up, and indie-rock whipping boy Zach Braff has also placed their songs in some Scrubs episodes. more ›

Wine And Food Festival Preview: Austinist Interviews Lynn Zeller of Mandola Estates Winery

Back in early 2006, foodies were abuzz about the pizzas and Italian food products on offer at Mandola's Market on 47th Street. The shop fast became a neighborhood mainstay and maintains a loyal following. When we recently became aware that they were also planning a combination winery and restaurant venture in Driftwood (home of The Salt Lick), we contacted Mandola Estates hospitality head Lynn Zeller to find out more. The upshot of our talk:... more ›

Wine And Food Festival Preview: Stars Across Texas Tasting

Sixty restaurants, thirty wineries, and you. This is perhaps the simplest way to describe the indulgence that is the Stars Across Texas tasting at the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival. A veritable "who's who" of Texas restaurants each prepare small portions of signature dishes for guests to sample, making the most difficult choice simply what to eat before you run out of room. Last year, we had sushi tarts from Roy's, Shiner-braised... more ›
