Fun Fest Comedian Profile: Todd Barry (Is Icky?)

That’s right. Someone who worships Conan O’Brien believes Todd Barry to be “Icky”. So that puts him amongst the ranks of Gonzo journalism and oh who gives a shit what O’Brien’s viewers think. Todd will be visiting Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009! But not to protest Eugene Mirman!

Maria Bamford, along with Zach Galifianakis, Patton Oswalt, and Brian Posehn, was one of the original Comedians of Comedy. We spoke with Maria recently about her upcoming performance tonight (sold out) and tomorrow night at Cap City Comedy Club. The Comedians of Comedy premiered at SXSW in 2004, right? Right. Were you there for that? I think I was. Hold on a second. Yes, I was. I was there. What did you think about SXSW? It was awesome. You get to watch movies. I like the place where you watch movies and can have a beer and eat something. The Drafthouse. Yeah. That was really great. I like that.

This year's SXSW Music lineup seems to be taking shape a bit more quickly than last year, as bands have taken it upon themselves to announce showcases publicly before the official list release by SX organizers. This is a departure from prior years, but since festival officials aren't complaining, we assume they're happy to let the hype build as the acts trickle in. This week's top twelve additions:

Nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, political reporter, and beloved Austinite Molly Ivins passed away in her home yesterday at the age of 62. In a remarkable career that spanned nearly four decades, Ivins commanded the respect and admiration of a devoted national readership, who rallied around her unapologetically liberal, often satirical, and always insightful coverage of the Texas "Lege" and our leaders in Washington. Among various and sundry positions held, Ivins served as co-editor of the...

I had a good one saved up. I really, really, really wanted the whole thing to go smoothly. In my mind, it was an event. A mind circus. Something that I had, in some small way, planned for a long time. I had grand expectations.

Today being National Coming Out Day and all, we think it's the perfect opportunity to clue you in on a nifty nonprof that recently relocated to our little blue oasis: Fine By Me prints t-shirts emblazoned with the simple and catchy slogan, "Gay? Fine By Me." The long and short of it, as told by the FBM folks themselves: The T-Shirt Project is an easy way for the many, many Americans who support their LGBT...

With the start of Out of Bounds just weeks away, Austinist continues its look at sketch and improv happenings around town in this weekly series. (Did you think sketch, improv and stand up were all the same? You aren't alone. Burn off that Burrito el Suiza you had for lunch by making your finger clicky click on improv and sketch). Out of Bounds Tip of the Week 3 for All Improvisers Rafe Chase, Stephen...

Fresh from their spring festival tour, Austin's (by way of New Orleans) most ambitious troupe is producing a week of comedy of all types at The Space. Incorporating elements of stand up, sketch and improv and featuring comedians from around the city, Test Pattern will be ColdTowne's experimental foray into different kinds of programming before opening up the Space full time. “We’re very excited about this opportunity,” says ColdTowner Arthur Simone. “Austin’s been so...

Howard Hawks once defined a good movie as containing three great scenes and no bad ones. The Omen remake, which opens today, has only two great scenes (oddly, both of them involve food), and even they can’t stand up to the flood of mediocre-to-laughable action that transpires elsewhere in this interminable thing.

An import that gives new meaning to the lyrics of Kristy MacColl’s “In These Shoes,” is the British feel good comedy with a sexy twist, Kinky Boots. Easily compared to The Full Monty and Calendar Girls, it's a fun and fast-paced story inspired by true events at a shoe factory in the conservative English town of Northamptonshire.

Torontoist throws down the gauntlet and challenges all comers: pillow fight, bitch. They also stand up for a fellow blogger taking heat from the TTC and welcome city-wide WiFi. SFist can finally admit it: It's possible that Bary Bonds juiced. Is Bay Area artist (tempted to put quotes around that) Thomas Kinkaid "kinda crappy" or "explosively crappy" or does he just like marking territory? SFist wonders. Technology comes in the form of new Mac goodness...

After Wired ran a story documenting the GoogleCenter of the United States a bunch of ists jumped on the opportunity to figure out their own middle. Gothamist, Chicagoist, Bostonist and Seattlest all zoomed in on their creamy GoogleCenters. A crack cartography team is hard at work determining the GoogleCenter of the Ist-a-verse as you read this... Austinist read a book about Olympian Bode Miller and liked it. They also took a few pictures of...

Our friends over at Texas Fair Trade Coalition have alerted us to the fact that this week (13th-19th) is Wal-Mart week. What will you do? Go to Wal-Mart Watch to find out more, take the pledge and join the fight against one of our country’s most unscrupulous employers.

We know you’re all exhausted from the Factory People/Youth of Tomorrow Birthday Party last night, but they say the best cure for a hangover is more drinking! Luckily, you can drink for a good cause tonight. Stand Up for Kids, an organization that helps homeless and street kids through outreach programs across America, is hosting a happy hour benefit at Maggie Mae’s (323 E. 6th St.) from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Entry is...

Let's face the plain truth about human existence: No one likes to be told what to do. Places like Austin, in particular, where there is an educated and motivated populace, send out a resounding "go f*&^ yourself" when ordered around. As Austinist is fond of telling people, this is Austin, but it's still Texas. That is why the new smoking ban is so disingenuous: it goes against fundamental beliefs we hold as a community, even if it would make us all healthier in the long run.
